LAB REPORT1: T-TEST (INDEPENDENT)

Introduction There are different designs of keyboard out in the market. Some are ergonomically designed to integrate comfort and efficiency as well as prevent disorders related to prolonged keyboard use. Keyboard designs have also been made to increase the user s typing speed and reduce errors. A psychologist studying the human factors of computer keyboards sets up an experiment to compare two different keyboard designs to determine if the typing speeds on the two different keyboards are significantly different. Methodology Microsoft Excel 2007 was used to perform t-test. Data were entered into excel and data analysis two-sample assuming equal variance was used. Results were then recorded and interpreted. Results and Discussion The data gathered from a group of twenty people who used Keyboard A and Keyboard B are independent of one another and so tTest for independent samples was used for analysis. It is a two-tailed test as well as there is no directional difference. The null hypothesis for this experiment is the typing speeds of two different groups of users on the two different keyboards are equal or the same. And the alternative hypothesis is that the typing speeds on the two different keyboards are significantly different. After data analysis, it was determined that t-value is 2.80 and the critical value of this two-tailed test having a level of significance of 0.05 and a degree of freedom of 20 is 2.09. In an independent t-test, if the tvalue is greater than the critical value, the null hypothesis is rejected and an inference can be made. Conclusion Since the t-value of 2.80 is greater than the critical value of 2.09, the null hypothesis is rejected. Therefore, the typing speeds on two different keyboards are significantly different. Keyboard design affects a person s performance.
