Phyllis Bass teaches our Twos classes. Shehas been involved with EPCP since 1982 whenboth her sons attended the Preschool.Phyllis served on the board as Co-presidentand PCPO Representative. She beganteaching here in 1988.Phyllis’ education includes two years ofLiberal Arts courses with an emphasis inPsychology, at Wayne State University andMichigan State University. Phyllis’ educationis supplemented with early childhoodeducation workshops at LCC and U of O. Sheis a member of NAEYC (National Associationfor the Education of Young Children).Shawna White teaches our Threes class.She has 10 years of experience in parentparticipation preschools (cooperatives), andshe is a member of the NAEYC.Shawna started her teaching career as aparent at United Methodist Co-op NurserySchool in Burlingame, CA with her first sonin 1997. Shawna served on the parent boardof directors as the Council Representativeto the California Council of ParentParticipation Nursery Schools. She wentback to college in order to begin subbing inthe Threes class, and then was a teacher'saide for a year. Shortly thereafter, shebecame the Three's teacher for several years. In addition to teaching the Threesclass three times a

week, she also taught theToddler class twice a week.Mary Walker teaches our Fours class. Bothher daughter and son attended EPCP. Maryserved in a number of different boardpositions while a parent of EPCP.Mary graduated from the University ofOregon with degrees in History andEducation. Her professional history hasincluded business management, special eventplanning and volunteer coordination.Mary is very active at the elementaryschools her children now attend.EPCP teachers are members of the OregonAssociation for the Education of YoungChildren (OAEYC) and continue theireducation by attending workshops andconferences through OAEYC, Parent-ChildPreschools of Oregon (PCPO) and EC Cares(Early Childhood Coordination Agency forReferrals, Evaluations and Services in LaneCounty). Our teachers offer a uniqueperspective on our preschool since they haveexperienced the cooperative environmentfrom both the teacher and parent aspect.

ISSION

The primary mission of Eugene’s Parent-ChildPreschool is to encourage a lifelong love oflearning by providing the best possible socialand educational experience for children andtheir families within a caring community ofits members. Regular and active parentalparticipation in the preschool ensures thatan atmosphere of love and caring surroundsour children’s growth and learning.Organizationally, the Preschool relies on thetalents of its teachers and members forbasic direction, fundraising, and specialprojects. The co-op offers parent educationopportunities as well as mutual support fromother parents.

ROGRAM

We offer a high quality social and learningexperience for preschool children, and weare proud to offer a developmental,diversity-rich program. Our programcenters on the individual child and strives toenhance positive self-esteem. We promotethe concept that play and the freedom toexplore provide the preschool child with theopportunity to develop emotionally,intellectually, physically, and socially.Learning and growth take place through self-discovery, self-directed, and sensoryactivities. Our teachers help each childlearn self- discipline and responsibility forhimself/herself, as well as essentialcommunication skills. A safe and nurturing,and stimulating environment is provided toallow the children to discover their ownunique qualities and those of others.

Parents at EPCP want to take an active rolein their children's education. As parents, weshare in the daily operation of the preschool,as well as participate in fundraising anddecision-making. Parents assist the teachersin the classroom. Attendance at generalmeetings during the school year is alsorequired. Limited participation slots areavailable for a higher monthly tuition.Please call for more details.

UNDRAISING

Each spring the Preschool parents present achildren’s play and shadow puppet theaterproduction for the community. Each co-opmember is required to help with thisproduction. All proceeds go directly back tothe preschool, helping to maintain lowtuition.
