------------------------------------------------------------------------------------LPC Acts to Designate East 10th Street Historic District but Rooftop Addition Beats the Clock

Picture from EV Grieve.

Racing the clock, the Landmarks Commission held a public hearing on the 26 buildings in the proposed East 10th Street Historic District, followed by a unanimous vote to designate the district. This swift action was caused by the application of a property owner at 315 East 10th Street to put an unsympathetic rooftop addition on their building. Unfortunately, the LPC was not able to act within the 40 day window afforded by the Department of Buildings permit process and the permit was issued on 1/13/12. This kind of gamesmanship is completely unacceptable the LPC had been considering this small district for months and that was well-known in the community. While we understand that there must be limits on the LPCs powers and responsibility with regard to buildings which are not yet designated, this situation should not be allowed to stand. HDC calls on the administration to create a process which requires the agencies to interact in a sensible fashion and for the Council to pass CM Rosie Mendezs Landmarks Protection Bill which would remedy this exact situation. _____________________________________________________________________
