UConn Paralegal Litigation
Program at Avery Point Campus
By FFSC
GROTON, Conn. - Do
you often feel angry at
work? Do you have a short
temper every time you try
to talk to your children? The
Fleet and Family Support
Center is introducing a
new six-week program on
Anger Management begin-
ning Feb. 1. This group
is the right fit for Sailors
who self-assess their anger
management as yellow
or red on the Operational
Stress Continuuim and who
require more in depth assis-
tance than a general edu-
cational program or over-
view of anger management.
Leaders who observe anger-
related behavior on the job
now have an additional
resource to which they can
direct their sailors.
Anger at home or at
work has far reaching con-
sequences. The inappropri-
ate or frequent expression
of anger can have dam-
aging consequences such
as police arrest, physical
injury, or at the very least,
alienation from loved ones.
Angry outbursts can also
lead to jail time, divorce
and, for military members,
a loss in rank or pay. Anger
can affect family, friends,
work and romantic relation-
ships. It can also negatively
affect memory, concentra-
tion and creativity.
This six-week program
can help Sailors learn skills
to manage their anger and
diminish the destructive
impact it can have on their
lives.
Clients will learn to iden-
tify situations that trigger
anger and ways they can
measure the degree of their
anger. Participants will
develop personal anger con-
trol plans, which they will
modify as they learn strate-
gies for coping appropriate-
ly. Strategies will include
breathing and muscle relax-
ation exercises as well as
the technique of timeouts
to think instead of to react.
In addition, the key ele-
ments of Operational Stress
Control will be reviewed.
Clients will become familiar
with the Stress Continuum
and learn traits that pro-
mote increased resilience.
A companion participant
workbook will provide cli-
ents with a summary of
core concepts, worksheets
for homework assignments,
and space to take notes dur-
ing the sessions.
The group, starting Feb.
1 is open to both men and
women and will meet on
Wednesdays from 1 to 3
p.m. Sailors may join the
group at any time and it is
open to all.
Contact Karen Kershaw
or Charles LeMieux at Fleet
and Family Support at
(860) 694-4875 to enroll in
the program.

Naval Submarine Base New London
holds special screening of iCarly
By MCC Jim ODonnell
Naval Submarine Base New
London Public Affairs
GROTON, Conn. - Naval
Submarine Base New
London (SUBASE) wel-
comed more than 1,300
fans of the hit Nickelodeon
show iCarly who were
on hand for a special
screening and cast appear-
ance at the bases Dealey
Center Theater, Jan. 11.
Before the screening,
the cast paid a special visit
to the crew of the Los
Angeles-class attack sub-
marine USS Hartford (SSN
768).
The cast members and
guests received a guided
tour of the submarine by
the boats commanding
officer, Commander Steve
Wilkinson, and Chief of
the Boat, Senior Chief Eric
Mathley.
I was very honored to
have an opportunity to
give the iCarly cast and
guests a tour of the boat,
said Mathley.
That the shows lead
character is a military
child and that some of the
iCarly shows have dealt
with the things military
kids have to deal with is
pretty nice, said Mathley.
For the iCarly cast
members, it was their first
time being on a nuclear-
powered submarine.
Its been my dream
since I was a little kid, to
go on a submarine, said
cast member Noah Munck
who plays Gibby on the
show.
It was pretty great to
get a chance to actually
go on a submarine, said
Nathan Kress. Kress, who
plays Freddie, said he had
toured a World War II
submarine once before,
but that had not prepared
him for Wednesday night.
To be able to go down
and see something mod-
ern that our Navy is using
right now was really cool.
Kress said his favorite
part of the tour was the
visit to the control room
where he saw the center
of operations for the boat.
We got a chance to look
through a periscope which
was probably the highlight
of the tour, added Kress.
The iCarly cast spent
about 30 minutes on the
submarine and the cast
members said they were
all impressed.
Visiting the Hartford
was just awesome, said
Munck. What a great
experience.

audience focus is the 5-
12-year-old demographic,
there were even a few
more mature fans in
attendance.
I guess Im a fan too,
said Chief Master-at-Arms
Charlie Wenzel who,
in addition to ensuring
security was prepared
for Wednesday nights
event, was making sure
his daughter Rylie got to
see the show. I watch
it with my daughter and
its a funny show, I like
it.
I also like the fact that
it deals with kids that
have a parent in the mili-
tary deployed away from
home and how they han-
dle things, said Wenzel.
iCarly revolves
around the shows name-
sake Carly Shay (played
by Cosgrove) and her
friends Sam (played
by Jennette McCurdy),
Freddie (played by
Kress), Gibby (played
by Munck), and broth-
er Spencer (played by
Jerry Trainor). In the
show, Carlys father is
an Air Force Colonel
perpetually deployed
away from home, some-
times on a submarine.
Although most kids here
at SUBASE dont have
a parent deployed year-
round it is a theme that
is very well understood
among the population of
this base in southeastern
Connecticut.
In Wednesdays screen-
ing of the episode titled
iMeet the First Lady,
Carly is disappoint-
ed when her father is
unable to make it home
for his birthday because
of another deployment.
Carlys friends to try to
brighten her mood by
putting on a special webi-
sode for her and her dad,
which captures the atten-
tion of the government
and the First Lady.
The First Lady of the
United States, Michelle
Obama guest stars on the
show to be broadcast Jan.
16. In the episode Obama
surprises the iCarly
gang to thank them for
supporting Carly when
her dad is away.
Obama is a staunch
supporter and spokes-
person for the Joining
Forces organization. Mrs.
Obama along with the
Dr. Jill Biden, the wife
of Vice President Joseph
Biden, spearhead the
organization to help sup-
port military families and
advocate for their priori-
ties.
Following the premiere
of IMeet the First Lady
the cast was brought out
on stage to the excited
screams of those in atten-
dance. The cast members
spoke about their experi-
ences meeting the First
Lady and even demon-
strated some of their per-
sonal skills like juggling
and human beat boxing
to the enjoyment of the
audience.
After leaving the stage
the iCarly cast stuck
around to meet some of
their fans in the back
of the Dealey Center
Theater. For Nathaniel
Rivers, who just turned
ten Wednesday and his
sister Alyssa, 8, it was
a chance like no other.
Both Rivers children met
the actors, posed for pho-
tos and received auto-
graphs from the cast.
It was really fun
because I got to see them
for the first time, said
Alyssa. I got to meet
Miranda Cosgrove she is
a really good singer.
I thought it was awe-
some, said Nathaniel.
Ive never done some-
thing like this. This is
my favorite TV show, I
especially like to thank
my parents it was the
best birthday ever, said
Nathaniel.

6 THE DOLPHIN Thursday, January 19, 2012
due to the wide variety
of submarines and sup-
port ships that have made
up the squadron through-
out the decades, said
Holland.
The submarines first
assigned to the squadron
at the time of establish-
ment comprised of the
Fleet Boats Grouper
(SS 214), Flying Fish (SS
229), Finback (SS 230),
and Raton (SS 270), and
diesel submarines Atule
(SS 403), Quillback (SS
424), Sarda (SS 488)
along with the support
ship Chewink (ASR 3).
As a tribute to the
squadrons history, local
artist Dan Price produced
a painting depicting a sub-
marine representing each
decade of the squadrons
existence. Holland pre-
sented the painting to the
Naval Submarine Library
and Museum/Historic
Ship Nautilus following
the disestablishment.
I have been painting
for about 20 years and
I have produced a few
commissioning paintings
for several boats, said
Price, a resident of East
Lyme. Im very inter-
ested in naval history and
a painting like this that
spans 60 years was inter-
esting to create.
According to command
history for COMSUBRON
2, the mission of the
squadron was to pro-
vide operation, logistical,
and maintenance sup-
port to ships and units
assigned. The squadrons
goals included assisting
assigned ships to develop
and maintain warfighting
readiness, thus providing
the nation with assets
to surge forward when
necessary to defend the
nations interests.
This ceremony is a
great opportunity to rec-
ognize the contribution
the ships of Squadron 2
have made to the subma-
rine force and our nation.
In addition, we celebrate
all the efforts made by
the supporting commands
and organizations in and
around SUBASE New
London. Submarining is
truly a team effort, and we
couldnt have deployed all
those submarines without
their help, said Holland.
During the dises-
tablishment, Holland
also assumed duties as
COMSUBRON 4 relieving
Capt. Mike Bernacchi.
Bernacchi will assume
the duties as chief of staff,
Commander, Submarine
Group 2.

GROTON, Conn. The Navy Submarine Base New
London (SUBASE) Youth Center has become a posi-
tive staple in the youth of our military community.
Whether its after-school tutoring programs or com-
petitive sports, the Youth Center has a wide range of
activities.
Miles Daniels, youth and teen sports coordinator,
said that competitive sports programs have grown
drastically since he has taken over.
The number of children and teens in our com-
petitive sports programs has more than doubled and
sometimes we have as many as 92 kids involved
now, said Daniels. We continue to work with
the Groton, New London, and Montville Park and
Recreation Departments.
The center has basketball, dance classes, and even
judo.
Daniels said that his source of inspiration in getting
involved at the Youth Center comes from his love of
sports and personal feelings of being a positive mentor
faor young people.
I believe that it is very important for kids to have a
good place to hang out, and keep them off the streets,
said Daniels.
According to Daniels these programs help to moti-
vate the SUBASE youth and give them a sense of
pride in the center and pride in themselves. All young
people involved in competitive sports are required to
show their report cards in order play, and if they are
failing any of their subjects they will not be allowed to
participate in order to give them more time to study.
The Youth Center held a competition to design
a new mascot for the center. The winner Megan
Malone, came up with the mascot Squids. Daniels
said that the parents were really involved.
In addition to the sports programs the center also
gives teens the opportunity to mentor their younger
peers. Daniels said that the Youth Center teens tutor
younger children with the School Age Care (SAC)
program, Monday through Thursday.
The SUBASE Youth Center will be offering classes
next month for 12-15 year olds on babysitting. The
course will cover many common areas in childcare as
well as certified first aid and CPR.
