The Center for International Media Assistance (CIMA)
, a project o theNational Endowment or Democracy, aims to strengthen the support, raisethe visibility, and improve the eectiveness o media assistance programsby providing inormation, building networks, conducting research, andhighlighting the indispensable role independent media play in the cre-ation and development o sustainable democracies around the world. Animportant aspect o CIMAs work is to research ways to attract additionalU.S. private sector interest in and support or international media develop-ment. The center was one o the o the main nongovernmental organizerso World Press Freedom Day 2011 in Washington, DC.CIMA convenes working groups, discussions, and panels on a variety o topics in the feld o media development and assistance. The center alsoissues reports and recommendations based on working group discussionsand other investigations. These reports aim to provide policymakers, aswell as donors and practitioners, with ideas or bolstering the eectivenesso media assistance.

Dale Peskin is a media analyst and entrepreneur based in Reston, VA. He is co-founder andcurator of the We Media Group, which reports on global trends in media, technology, and theconnected society. He creates new ventures and conducts the annual We Media conferenceand Pitch It Investment Challenge with his colleague, Andrew Nachison. Peskin also servesas a principal and chief knowledge officer of iFOCOS, a non-profit media think tank. He is amember of CIMA’s Advisory Council.Peskin previously served as executive director of the news industry think tank, New Directionsfor News, and as managing director of the Media Center at the American Press Institute. Aformer newspaper editor and reporter, he was assistant managing editor of the
 Detroit News
in1989-1996, and the
 Dallas Morning News
in 1997-2002. In Dallas, he became vice president of the publishing division of the Morning News’s parent company, Belo, and founded its onlinesubsidiary, Belo Interactive. In 1997, Peskin was the editor who broke the first investigativestory on the Internet prior to its publication in the newspaper–called a “landmark event” and“the biggest change in newspapers in 25 years” by the British newspaper the
