Ten, turning eastrom North Shenandoah Avenueshortly ater 5 p.m., we oundright lane trac backed up to theintersection o 14th Street andNorth Shenandoah and movingat a snails pace, i at all.Within hours we had a numbero inquiries rom motorists ques-tioning the weekend rush-hourtiming o town maintenancework. Our gut reaction was thatit had to be emergency repairsto broken lines even though thewording o a public works pressrelease reerenced only “mainte-nance” work. And guess what – deenders o the town that we are, we werecorrect.“Tis was an emergency re-pair on a sewer lateral at PizzaHut. Te own was notied by their plumber that their lateralhad collapsed. Due to the ailure, the restaurant was closed Friday.Te town took emergency mea-sures to repair the lateral andallow them to resume business,”own Manager Steve Burke toldus the ollowing day. Burke elabo-rated that Pizza Hut had reportedsome internal line problems they were not sure did not originatewith town lines about a monthearlier.“Te previous backup occurredapproximately one month ago.Te most recent backup resultedin the business owner contactinga plumbing rm, as no cleanoutwas available to the town or in-spection o our lateral,” Burkesaid. “In the process o install-ing a cleanout, their contractorunearthed an existing one. Fol-lowing this work, the contractordetermined that there was a ail-ure in the lateral located withinthe [town] right-o-way o 14thStreet. At this point, the towninitiated the emergency repairwork that took place on Friday night (Jan. 6).”
More than usual?
We asked Burke i there havebeen an inordinate number o water and sewer line breaks soar this winter, albeit a generally mild winter.“We don’t have a running totalo water breaks, but we do com-pile those numbers in the springto evaluate the amount o eortencountered during the winter.I believe we’ve experienced lessthan 10 breaks thus ar in vari-ous locations throughout thetown,” he said the second weeko January. “We attribute thebreak on Washington Avenue tothe extreme temperature changethat took place over a one day period. emperatures did rangerom single digits to ty degreesin the span o a day. Tis e-ect causes the ground to shrinkand swell. Te resulting earthmovement resulted in a signi-cant break on the 1-inch watermain.”Burke also reported that a wa-ter line leak at the intersection o Virginia Avenue and Sixth Streetwas discovered by the presence
