Temperature variances exist in allsystems, regardless of materials, working fluid or system design. There is no process that involvesheating a particularmedium wheretemperature of that medium is thesame throughout—temperaturegradients will always exist. Sensingthe temperature at just one locationin a process is acceptable for manyapplications because temperaturegradients are often insignificant. However, there is a need in manyapplications to monitor thetemperature in multiple locations toensure a safe, accurate and costefficient process. Installing multipleindependent, temperature sensorsmay be impractical due to cost orspace limitations.Multipoint temperature sensors arecapable of accurately measuringtemperatures at various locationsalong its length. They are used in abroad range of processes andinstallations—predominatelyapplications involving a large orcomplex process where closetemperature control is necessary.Multipoint temperature sensors aredesigned to meet the requirementsof the specific application; i.e.,temperature, pressure, chemicalenvironment, time response andnumber of points required. Sensorsare constructed from a variety ofprotecting tube materials, withXACTPAK
mineral insulated, metal-sheathed cable. Multipointtemperaturesensors are available ineither standard or special ASTMthermocouple calibration tolerances. For applications requiring extremeaccuracy, special constructions canbe made with platinum RTDs.
