Women’s Intercultural CenterIndividual and Group Counseling Services
Thank you for your interest in participating in the counseling services at the Women’s InterculturalCenter (WInC). We hope to provide you with some introductory information about who the counselorsare and the services being offered. Please do not hesitate to speak with the counselors if you have anyquestions or concerns.
Who are the counselors?
The counselors are doctoral students in the counseling program at New Mexico State University. Animportant part of their training is gaining counseling experience within the community. They offerservices in English and Spanish and have experience in providing counseling in diverse settings. Theyoffer counseling services to children, adolescents, adults and families. They approach counseling relationship from a humanistic stance, recognizing the unique qualities andstrengths of each individual and the way in which individuals make their own lives meaningful. They alsoincorporate problem solving and other techniques as necessary, and value working together in thedirection of the goals of the client.
What is individual counseling?
In individual counseling, the client and the counselor typically meet once a week for 6 to 8 weeks forapproximately 50 minute sessions. Some clients choose to meet for fewer or more sessions based on theirneeds and goals. Individual counseling offers a space where the client can discuss any concerns, worriesor problems he/she may be experiencing, in addition to any potential areas of growth. Clients speak abouta variety of topics, some which include (but are not limited to) stress management, familycommunication, partners relationships, personal development, and grief and loss. The counselors supportthe client in utilizing his/her personal strengths to work towards his/her goals. They also offer the clientalternative points of view in the process.
What is group counseling?
Group counseling involves a small group of people (usually 4-8) who meet together weekly with thecounselors to talk about their struggles, problems, and/or areas of growth. These groups can take avariety of forms. Some focus on a specific topic or problem, while others address a number of differentconcerns. In group counseling, clients typically share their experiences, ideas, and concern with thecounselors and the group as a whole, and often support and learn from one another in the process.

How to cancel an appointment?
Based on WInC policy, a person cannot miss more than 2 sessions without advance notice. An advancednotice is a call done two days or more before the appointment date which notifies the counselor about theclient’s ability to come to counseling during their scheduled time. While the Center understands that certain life circumstances prevent people from coming to theirscheduled appointments, advanced notices allow the counselors to see people in need of services.Clients will be told about the number of sessions missed during their reminder call. When clients miss the allowed 2 (two) sessions their services will be terminated to allow othercommunity members to receive the free counseling services. When you need to cancel an appointment, please call WInC at 575-882-556.
