A new yeAr, A new you!
Every year we do it – wemake a commitment to change. The change may be betterhealth, to stop smoking, to spend more time with amily – andevery year we all o the band wagon. We have an insurgenceo people that come to Talisman Centre throughout January &February with great intentions o achieving their new yearsresolution. But slowly, beginning in March, we see a declinein the volume o people as they perceive their resolutioncompleted or, more oten, they simply give up.I like the way our eature athlete in this issue,
Byth Harty
, puts it: “
it’s about  setting a long term goal that works or me and then committing ull heartedly to that goal.
I’ve been involved in sport long enough to know that i you don’t commit, you won’tsucceed. We can nd excuses along the way. Eliminate them and your goal is so much easierto get to. I really believe that i you develop a routine or yoursel or get a workout partner,you are more likely to stick to a regular workout routine and keep it going throughout theyear rather than going or a one-time deal, as many new years resolutions tend to be.Get yoursel kick started by hiring a personal trainer. You will nd that you lit more,run aster, actually do ab crunches and are sore the next day, but the big thing is that youwill see immediate results. It’s amazing the dierence a trainer can make in your regularworkout routine.Ater retiring rom competitive swimming a ew years ago, I hired a personal trainerto help me develop a maintenance program and ensure that the notorious “ater-sportbulge” didn’t appear. I can tell you that I thought I’d worked hard or the several years o varsity and club swimming, training over 22 hours a week, pushing mysel to the point o exhaustion, but my personal trainer opened my eyes to what my actual physical capabilitieswere and how, in certain areas, I was coasting. When I did weights I did them at a weightthat I wanted and thought was reasonable but my trainer pushed me to lit weight I neverthought possible and gave me exercises that worked muscles I never even knew I had. Healso taught balance in terms o what muscles groups I should be ocusing on to get theresults I wanted as well as encouraging proper nutrition along the way. He made me runaster and harder than I would have ever thought possible and made sweat pour o me likeI was still in the pool!I think that by having a personal trainer I was able to learn new exercises properly,work in new routines and develop a regular scheduled exercise regimen custom-designedor me.A new year, a new you, but grab someone else along the way. It’s so much easierwhen you have someone pushing you.
