This report is designed to assist businesses make important decisions that will impact not only their own organisations’development but also the growth o the local economy.By orecasting the uture demand and supply o skilled labour across multiple industry types, the report also representsa baseline or ongoing economic planning. North Shore City is the ourth largestcity in New Zealand in terms opopulation, and constitutes one oseven local authority areas withinthe Auckland region. Being part oNew Zealand’s largest populationand business centre creates manyopportunities, issues and challengesor the City.This report seeks to develop anddescribe a ‘Future Scenario’ or theNorth Shore economy as generatedby using the Economic FuturesModel (EFM). The ‘Future Scenario’is a projection o the likely natureo the economy (in 01) based onhistoric sectoral trends, underlyingcharacteristics and industrydynamics. The modelling work wasaugmented with an internet-basedsurvey.Invitations to participate in the surveywere sent to businesses on theEnterprise North Shore (ENS) mailinglist and links to the website werepublished in the Enterprise magazine.The ‘Future Scenario’ highlights keyshits in the economy in terms oemployment, output and value addedwith a ocus on the targeted businesssectors. Similarly, uture employmentrequirements have been determinedby occupation and sector.This Executive Summary highlightsthe local economy’s ability to drivegrowth and deliver better standardso living to North Shore householdsthrough wealth creation andemployment opportunities. It ormspart o a package o inormationprepared or Enterprise North Shoreand North Shore City Council andreects:• A summary o the ‘FutureScenario’ based on a modelledeconomic uture, and• The key indicators o growth interms o demographics and high-level economic characteristics othe City.
Its aim is to set a baseline or theuture and endorse the ocus onthe targeted business sectorswhich are clustered around hightechnology, education, sports,health, and proessional businessservices as key drivers o growth.
In order to quantiy a likely,optimal uture, Enterprise NorthShore will continue to work withbusinesses to defne the actualpotential inherent in North Shoreas a location or these key industrygroups, and to address issues orthreats to economic growth.
While the resulting data suggestsstrong growth, it is clear thatthe ideal uture economicenvironment will not occurwithout intervention.
EnterpriseNorth Shore, in conjunction withNorth Shore City Council, hasa vital role to play in acilitatinggrowth in the targeted sectors andthe economy overall, by ensuringinvestment conditions in NorthShore are appropriate and thatissues such as access to skilledlabour and other key actors oproduction are addressed.
