SNAIL FARMING

PRODUCTION ASPECT FACILITIES OF PRODUCTION AND EQUIPMENT The facilities needed for snail breeding in a garden cage are : 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Surrounding fence with zinc cover on top which is rubbed with detergent. Surrounding trenches and middle trench. Paths to control the feeding and harvest. Reservoir. Plants for shading the cage/farm.

The model of an open farm for snails is described as a piece of land that is round-bordered with a fence of 60 cm height. Inside, there are plants, trenches, paths, and snail-housing bins. This farm can be arranged in such a way that it looks like a jungle. The plots for the parents, hatching, and nurturing/growing should be separated from one another. The snails can be put into the farm when shading plants have formed foliages providing the required degree of shade. Shading plants can be arranged according to a certain planting arrangement. For instance, perennial trees like melinjo, orange and clove are planted with the spacing of 10 x 10 m, while bananas and pineapples have the spacing of respectively 5x5 m and 1x1 m. Thus, in a plot of 100 square meter there will be 4 perennial trees, 5 banana trees, and 80 pineapple trees. Under those trees, mainly in the parent plot, nests for egg-laying made from dry banana leaves or rice stalks/straws are placed. The outer layer of the surrounding fence is covered with iron sheeting fence. The corner made by the plant fence and the iron-sheeting fence is rubbed with detergent to prevent snails from running out of the cage. The snails to be harvested are put into the bins prior to further processing. The bins are 1 meter length, 0.75 meter width, and 1.5 meter height, with the capacity of 1 250 snails. The shape and design of this open cage can be seen in Figure 4.1. below. The supporting equipment for snail farm includes tools commonly used in agricultural activities, the tools for washing the yields, for transporting the feed and the adult snails.
