Thursday, September 13, 2012 through Wednesday, July 17, 2013
Application deadline is Friday, April 20, 2012.
Each year there are approximately 15 fellowships.
All Senate fellowships are on-site in Albany, New York.
Fellowships are not nancial aid for aca-demic work, on-campus or classroom study. Housing in Albany is the responsibility of the Fellow.
A Grant-in-Study Stipend is awarded — $33,000 — distributed in biweekly installments proratedfrom the rst day to the last day of enrollment.
Some benet options are available (health, dental,vision, life insurance, and the retirement program).
Applications from a wide range of interests and disciplines are welcome and encouraged.
Trainingin the history/politics/government of New York State is not required. Placements are usually to theofce of an elected member of the Senate.
While Fellows are not Senate employees,
after the program ends, Fellows may sometimes be hiredto full employee status in the Senate. A great number of former Fellows are today employees of theSenate, the Assembly, the Executive Chamber, state agencies, associations, and lobbying rms.
Fellowship Overview
Basic Eligibility
In most cases, Fellows must be full-timematriculated graduate students in an accrediteduniversity during the immediate previous springand fall semesters.
Fellowships are open to all academic majors.
The Biggane Fellow will be a person in mid-career at the time of application. Bigganeapplicants need not be currently enrolled ingraduate-level study, but must have previousgraduate-level experience.

Writing Samples
The frst
writing sample is an essay. Any topicis acceptable. The essay may be a paper orportion of a paper previously prepared for aclass. The essay should be between 6-10 pages(double-spaced, single-sided, 8.5 x 11).
The second
writing sample is to be a policyproposal
(single-spaced, one page).
The third
writing sample is to be a rebuttal of your policy proposal (single-spaced, one page).
The ourth
writing sample is your Statemento Purpose
It should be no more than twosingle-spaced, 8.5 x 11 pages. The Statementshould explain why you are applying, what youhope to accomplish, and which ellowship youpreer and why.
Interviews and Selection
Interviews will be scheduled during the monthso May and June, and selections determinedin July.
Ofce Placement
All ofce placements are arranged by theOfce o Student Programs only.
Each Fellowis assigned to a speciic oice and is expectedto unction as a regular sta member.
While most placements are to the ofce oan elected member,
the Roth, Wiebe, andBiggane placements are made to central sta ofces rather than the ofce o an electedmember. The Roth placement is made tothe Senate Majority Press Ofce, the Wiebeplacement to the Majority Counsel/ProgramServices Ofce, and the Biggane placementto the Senate Finance Committee.Concurrent employment, on-campusobligations, and class work that mayconlict with ellowship commitments areprohibited. Upon arrival in September,Fellows participate in an orientationprogram in addition to regularly scheduledinormational orums.
