Veteran Jamaican singer Denroy Morgan, best known for the 1981 reggae-disco hit Ill Do Anything For You will be performing at the Linkage Award Ceremony, on March 11th, 2012 after a ten year hiatus, he will perform with his newly formed band, ASCH Ministry Band.
By Stefy Famous pursuing solo projects, Morgan Heritage nonetheless remains one of reggaes busiest touring outfits. On July 19th 2011, Denroy Morgan performed in Jamaica for the first time since the late 90s at the popular Kingston venue Studio 38. The occasion was the launch of his most recent album Link Up To Ethiopia released on Asaph Records with distribution through VP. Laza Morgan was the special guest, which his father said symbolized the passing of the Morgan musical torch from one generation to another. Denroy Morgan will be releasing a new single entitled My Timeon The Asaph Record Label in February of this year. He is currently penning his Autobiography Shepherd of a Man for an April release date.

orn in Clarendon, Jamaica, Morgan migrated to New York City in the late 60s. His initial success arrived with the Black Eagles, said to be Brooklyns first reggae band. A father of 30 children whom he raised in the Rastafarian way of life, the family was based in Springfield, Massachusetts where the children attended school. Each weekend the Morgan children commuted to Brooklyn with their father to further their musical instruction; recognizing his childrens innate talents, Morgan put aside his career aspirations to nurture their vocal and instrumental development.
At a 1992 press conference in Montego Bay, Jamaica, in association with the now defunct Reggae Sunsplash Music festival, Morgan introduced eight of his teenage children as the reggae group Morgan Heritage. Immediately following their Sunsplash set, Morgan Heritage was
signed to MCA Records; their debut album Miracle was released in 1994 but the group was dissatisfied with MCAs lack of support and severed ties with the label. Three Morgan siblings dropped out and Morgan Heritage reemerged in a tighter configuration featuring Roy Gramps Morgan on keyboards and vocals; Memmalatel Mr. Mojo Morgan on percussion and vocals; Nakhamyah Lukes Morgan on guitar; Una Morgan, the groups sole female member, on keyboards and vocals, and Peetah singing lead. Denroy Morgan repatriated to Jamaica in 1995, settling in the rural parish of St. Thomas and Morgan Heritage followed him back to the island. There they built their reputation as a formidable contemporary roots reggae ensemble with their late 90s releases for VP Records, most notably Dont Haffi Dread, produced by veteran Bobby Digital. Along with their father, Morgan Heritage was featured in a 1999 Fathers Day segment on the CBS TVs longstanding news program Sunday Morning. Although the groups members are now

In this post-modern exercise, they have seen where, despite his youthfulness and not have been brought through the main stream as others; he has made it to become the countrys first prime minister. He has a far way to go yet. But at least, even though he has been surreptitiously placed in the chair, which chair will be remembered by others of his ilk, the chance presents itself for our youngsters in future even if they are spawned from lowering estate, to be catapulted to the top. It therefore remains our humungous task to continue molding our children. When we have to leave them on the rock as we traverse on the outside to work for them, leave them in the company of others who care. They then will not end up having to bow and scrape to find themselves in bad company, to bring suffering and pain. 5 Hair Care Best Practices for Preventing Hair Loss and Promoting Hair Growth
If you use gels, wash them out

The pumpkin-colored hue of sweet potatoes not only looks pretty on your dinner plate, but its shade also works wonders on your complexion. Sweet potatoes boast large amounts of beta carotene -- an antioxidant whose red, yellow, and orange pigments dress many vegetables in their vibrant colors. Beta carotenes protective qualities defend against the damage that sun exposure will cause. Quick tip: For an extra dose of fiber, leave their skin on when preparing these tasty treats.
Sweet Potatoes
Add luster and softness to your complexion by feasting on salmon, a fish with one of the richest concentrations of omega-3 fatty acids. These healthy fats nourish the skin by reducing the bodys production of inflammatory substances, decreasing clogged pores, and averting fine lines and wrinkles. Quick tip: Buy extra fillets at the market and freeze them; having salmon on hand is the best way to ensure youll

An uncelebrated hero of supple skin is kiwi. This tangy-sweet treat packs more vitamin C per ounce than practically any other fruit. Vitamin C helps maintain the collagen in our skin, keeping it firm. But this nutrient can quickly evaporate through exposure to air, water, or heat. Kiwi is an ideal carrier since it locks in the juicy benefits firmly beneath its furry skin. Quick tip: For a quick and easy way to peel kiwi, cut the ends off first. The rest should be a cinch.

Choose turkey over other lunchtime meats for its high concentration of zinc. This mineral maintains collagen and elastin fibers that preserve skins elasticity and firmness. The healthiest variety to ask for at your grocerys deli counter? Roasted or smoked; flavored turkey, such as honey turkey or turkey pastrami, contains sugar and salt additives. Quick tip: Instead of a sandwich, toss turkey with spinach leaves. The latter is another nutritious food packed with zinc.

If you use hair gels, waxes, clays or any other sticky styling products you need to wash them out before you go to bed. When you sleep with your head firmly pressed against the pillow, styling products can work their way into your scalp and clog the pores. Styling products usually contain an array of chemicals that wont do newly developing hairs any good. Make sure you wash them out before bed to avoid this, or dont using sticky styling products altogether. All the common high street brand shampoos contain chemicals that you wouldnt want to put on your skin every day, if you knew what they were. Have a look at the ingredients list on the back of your shampoo. Youll most likely see the chemical sodium laurl sulphate, or some variation on that name. Even the top brands like Head and Shoulders, Pantene, Original Source and Herbal Essences contain this chemical and many others. With everyday use its thought that this can damage your hair and even poison your body.
Dietitians continue to debate just how much liquid we should consume each day, the requisite 8 to 10 glasses still stands. Our body is 70 to 80 percent water, and if we are not drinking enough, our cells dont regenerate and remove waste, resulting in a buildup of impurities.
Tea
Tying your hair back tightly pulls the hairs and gradually trains them to grow nearer to the surface of the scalp. Eventually they may grow so close to the surface that they lose their hold in the skin and fall out. The hairs at the front of your head are most likely to be the victims of this pulling and they are also the most vulnerable to the effects of hormonal hair loss.

Slow down the development of saggy, wrinkled skin by spooning sunflower seeds over salad. These seeds are replete with vitamin E -- a powerful antioxidant that decelerates the aging of skin cells, keeping us looking younger longer. Vitamin E is also known for its ability to diminish the appearance of scars. Quick tip: Pair unsalted sun-

Alternating glasses of water with hot tea or unsweetened iced tea -- green or black. These beverages boast their own supply of acne-fighting antioxidants and phytonutrients (healthy substances from plants).
Your hair is more vulnerable to damage when its wet. Its best to dry your hair with a soft towel and then leave it to dry naturally. Your hair will dry faster if you dont brush it as it will have a greater surface area exposed to the air. If you use leave-in conditioners dont rub them into the scalp. If you get a lot of split ends you should get your hair trimmed regularly, otherwise the splits will get longer and longer leaving your hair looking frizzy and horrible.
Quick tip: To avoid diluting your delicious cold brew with plain ice, fill ice trays with tea. Add a few cubes just before you drink!
When you brush your hair, use a hard bristled hair brush with plenty of space between the bristles. Make sure your hair is completely dry and vigorously brush your scalp, scratching the skin. Dont scratch so hard that it hurts but do scrape fairly hard. And dont do this if you have a dry, flaky or sore scalp. The action of scraping the scalp will help exfoliate but most importantly it will stimulate increased blood circulation in the scalp, which will bring nutrients to the hairs helping increase hair growth.

The United Nations announced that it is investigating two cases of sexual exploitation of children allegedly committed by its police personnel in Haiti. The first case involves UN Police (UNPOL) officers based in the capital, Port-au-Prince, while the second case involves one or more members of the Formed Police Unit (FPU) in Gonaives, UN spokesperson Martin Nesirky told reporters in New York. The United Nations is outraged by these allegations and takes its responsibility to deal with them extremely seriously, stated Nesirky. He added that the police contributing countries concerned have been informed. However, unlike
cases involving UN military personnel, investigations into allegations involving UN police personnel fall under the responsibility of the UN. For this reason, a UN team was dispatched to Haiti to investigate the allegations. The UN Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) stated in a news release that an investigation was immediately opened after the allegations were made. In addition, the UN Police Commissioner relieved the two suspects of their duties as a precaution to prevent them from having any contact with the population and to prevent any attempts to interfere with the investigation.

T&T Newsday Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar yesterday reinforced Governments commitment to enforcing the death penalty, saying they must do all they can to stop the current tsunami of crime that has hit Trinidad and Tobago. Delivering the feature address at the opening of the two-day National Security Policy Workshop at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port-of-Spain yesterday, PersadBissessar said: My Government and I remain committed to the people of this nation and will spare no effort to protect them. We shall continue in our efforts to facilitate the re-implementation of the death penalty so that we might both punish the guilty and deter the would-be offenders. Persad-Bissessars statement came mere days after a call by Minister of Works and Infrastructure, Jack Warner, for the reintroduction of the death penalty in light of the murders of three Felicity fishermen. The three men went missing after leaving home on January 10 to go on a fishing expedition. Their bodies were found floating in the Gulf of Paria three days later. Two men have since been charged in connection with the murders. Referring specifically to these murders, PersadBissessar said such an act was indicative of the fact that crime was not limited to on land alone anymore
and that ruthless gangs are now carrying out their nefarious criminal activities on the high seas. Claiming Government has been attempting to address this tsunami of crime that has hit Trinidad and Tobago, Persad-Bissessar said their efforts to eradicate crime included the introduction of various bills, including the Constitution Amendment C a p i t a l Offences Bill, 2011, which required a special majority of votes to be passed in the parliament. She said although the bill was not successful after the Opposition refused to support it, her Government remained committed to pursuing all avenues open to it in the fight against crime. This Government is committed to utilizing all its resources and bringing the full weight of the law down on those involved in criminal activity, PersadBissessar told those gathered. The workshop, which is being conducted in collaboration with the US Centre for Hemispheric Studies, is intended to influence the National Security Policys alignment with the 20122017 Ministry of National Security Strategic Plan for combating crime.

Recently, I sat in my local church congregation and listened to my pastors unique analogy on the topic: The Grace of God The Grace for Unity. After mulling over his sermon, the daunting sense of the ongoing lack of cohesiveness among a select few brought me to the apparent conclusion that Jamaicans have fallen short in this regard. Not only have we fallen short, but our diminutive approach to issues of importance continues to mar our growth and development. The writings of history recounts the struggles and fierce fightings of our enslaved ancestors in the Caribbean colonies particularly Jamaica, who refused to remain, shackled in bondage by their slave masters. This feat would not have become so immortalized had some of our most prominent slave revolt leaders in history the likes of Sam Sharpe, the matriarch Nanny of the Maroons, Cudjoe, Paul Bogle a Baptist deacon, not formed a unified faction and confronted their slave masters head-on in pursuit of freedom for their de-

scendants and themselves. Their example of unity and bravado is undeniably heroic; but how many of us treasure their sacrifices? While our nation gained its freedom though blood, sweat and tears, it does not give the right to hardened criminals who seek to defame our minuscule island called Jamaica with gruesome murders. They seem to have misinterpreted the cause and the purpose of our ancestors. As a people how can we unite to halt this destructive act? The political baton-exchange from the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) to the Peoples National Party (PNP) on December 29, 2011 has transformed the nation into an illuminative state, as many people are hopeful that the new government will change and alleviate most if not all, of the baggage left for disposal. The struggling economic situation, joblessness, community infrastructure are some of the topical issues in the nations media sphere. In all of this, the Portia SimpsonMiller led administration is expected to PERFORMPERFORM
with Denise (Lady D) Gomez | Email: justcallme6@yahoo.com PERFORM at the highest level. Again, in order for this mandate to be achieved, both parties must UNITE and set positive examples to all Jamaicans. The immigrant population in the Jamaican Diaspora has made significant contributions to the growing economy. Their business ventures range from media, construction, cosmetology, barbering, food and beverage, medical, legal, fashion designing, administration, you name it they are doing it. However, the distinct presence of disunity continues to prevail. Many have used the term crab-in-a-barrel against those who it is believed are either envious or simply bad mind due to underhanded measures that others have used to oppose them. It is disconcerting to the extent that one is sometimes fearful to share their dreams and aspirations with their own as they might dissuade them or run with their ideas. Disunity breeds friction and we should cease and desist from this practice. We have travelled to the United States which bears its own

methods of practice and culture; yet, we have left behind our own culture and sense of self that had once unified our ancestors. I believe if this selfish trend continues we will never own our own conglomerate. Why? We do not know how to work together and the I must be at the top at all times syndrome will ruin any prospective plans afoot. The Jamaican Diaspora with its air of eminence must have a voice: Unitya Must for 2012! The Jamaican motto Out of Many One People is synonymous to the theme of UNITY. As we raise the Jamaican flag high in anticipation of our nations 50th year of independence in 2012, may we reflect on that unforgettable day in 1962 when the British Union Jack was lowered and the Jamaican flag rose for the first time, marking Jamaicas independence and change. Uniting together we will raise our voices and singEternal father bless our land, Guard us with Thy Mighty Hand, Keep us free from evil powers, Be our light through countless hours

Keep listening and calling in with those prayer request and testimonies. We want to endeavor to maintain our New Year resolution to learn more about Gods word and apply it to our lives. he recent Republican debates on last Monday night, reportedly the second-to-last in a series of endless debates, were an exercise in scandalous, small-minded-buffoonery. It reminds us of how absolutely petty and self-absorbed these fellows are truly are. As I watched in earnest satisfaction and glee at the spectacle of these rich guys now espousing the very same issues of the obvious class war fare in these United States, one must only wonder if we are at a rally of Occupy Wall Street. It was with great joy as I watched the so-called front runners beat up on each other in their attempts to cast themselves as more conservative and/or as more Anti-establishment. It was a laughable irony. After so many of these debates, and all of the endless special pack commercials and advertisements, one thing is crystal clear, is that whichever candidate emerges as the Republican nominee, he will be so

The St Lucia Labour Party accused the former minister for tourism last year during heated election campaigns of agreeing with American Eagle to establish a flight he knew did not make any economic sense. The party claims that Chastanet gave American Eagle a revenue guarantee that if they could not fill the flight, the Saint Lucia Tourist Board would pay for the losses. The Director of Tourism, Louis Lewis declined to comment to the STAR after this reporter attempted to obtain accurate figures on just how much Saint Lucia was paying to AA. Sixteen other local government and non-governmental organizations will join hands with BRA to distribute more than 12 million highly nutritional food rations to thousands of internally displaced people affected by the earthquake of Haiti in January 2010. Other beneficiaries include pregnant women, orphaned/vulnerable children, the elderly, and people affected by cholera and living with HIV and AIDS and tuberculosis. The food distribution, which targets nine Dominican provinces and four Haiti border communes, complement four other important BRA projects that provide free antiparasitic medicines and multivitamins to 62,000 schoolaged children; deliver comprehensive health services and antiretroviral treatment to 550 people living with HIV/AIDS; expand USDA-funded agricultural productions for 7,000 cooperative farmers and their families; and deliver skills training and microcredit to 150 Haitian women.

Cesaria Evora, who started singing as a teenager in the bars of a little island off West Africa called Cape Verde in the 1950s died Saturday December 17th at the age of 70. Cesaria Evora, known as the Barefoot Diva because she always performed without shoes, died in the Baptista de Sousa Hospital in Mindelo in the island of Cape Verde. Cape Verde is a former Portuguese colony, reason why Cesarias music was influenced by the Portuguese rhythm, and this music was played all over the world. Countries like Brazil, Spain, and Angola loved her music because she sang in their language. Even though she sang in Portuguese, her audiences who couldnt understand the lyrics were moved by her stirring renditions, her unpretentious manner and the musics infectious beat. Her singing style brought comparisons to American jazz singer Billie Holiday. She belongs to the aristocracy of bar singers, French newspaper Le Monde said in 1991, adding that Evora had a voice to melt the soul. Cesarias international fame came late in life. Her 1988 album La Diva Aux Pieds Nus (Barefoot Diva), recorded in France where she first found popularity, launched her international career. Her 1995 album Cesaria was released in more than a dozen countries and brought her first Grammy nomination, leading to a tour of major concert halls around the world and album sales in the millions. She won a Grammy award in the World Music category in 2003 for her album Voz DAmor. Cesaria, known to her close friends as Cize (pronounced see-ZEH), was the bestknown performer of morna, Cape Verdes national music. Cesaria was born Aug. 27, 1941, and grew up in Mindelo, a port city of 47,000 people on the island of Sao Vicente, where sailors from Europe, America, Africa and Asia mingled in what was a lively cosmopolitan town with a fabled nightlife. The local musical style borrowed from those cultures, defying attempts to classify it. Our music is a lot of things, Cesaria told The Associated Press in a 2000 interview at her home. Some say its like the blues, or

jazz. Others say its like Brazilian or African music, but no one really knows. Not even the old ones. Cesaria was 7 years old when her father died, leaving a widow and seven children. At 10, with her mother unable to make ends meet, she was placed in an orphanage. I didnt like it. I value my freedom, she told the Associated Press. At 16, when Cesaria was doing piecework as a seamstress, a friend persuaded her to sing in one of the many sailors taverns in her town. As her popularity grew, she was also rowed out into the bay to sing on anchored ships. She received no pay - just free drinks. She used to smile when she recalled her fame as a heavy cognac drinker. And she sadly recalled the exact day - Dec. 15, 1994 - she had to give up drinking for her healths sake. Cesaria didnt think much of her international stardom and she went back to Mindelo whenever she could. She rebuilt her childhood home, turning it into a 10-bedroom house where friends and family often stayed over, and she always made sure she was home for Christmas. A heavy smoker for decades, Cesaria was diagnosed with heart problems in 2005. She suffered strokes in 2008 and in September 2011, when she announced she was retiring. She had a son and a daughter by different men but never married. Cesaria Evoria will be remembered in the entire world for her angelic voice and her eternal smoking on stage. May the soil of our ancestors receive you in perfect peace.

JERUSALEM A Palestinian woman was imprisoned for nine years in a bathroom by her father, beaten, barely fed and only let out at night, a social worker and police said Monday. She was given only a blanket, a radio, and a razor blade by her father, who encouraged her to kill herself, said the social worker, Hala Shreim. Palestinian police freed Baraa Melhem on Saturday January 21st in the West Bank town of Qalqilya, after a relative told authorities of the womans plight, said spokesman Adnan Damiri. The opening of this bridge need not rival or displace the alreadyopened link between Guyana and Brazil, provided an all-weather road estimated at US$40 million is built from the Guyana border town, Lethem, to Guyanas Atlantic coast. Guyanas Foreign Minister, Carolyn Rodrigues-Birkett, recently announced that Guyana has completed a feasibility study for the Lethem Road paving project. She is reported to have said: We would like to see this project accelerate quickly, but we also have to be very patient. While she did not say so, the ministers caution could be based on the level of concessional financing that Brazil is willing to give.

the consumer would be able to fix their credit within the time allotted which would allow the consumer to take out another loan with better interest rate before 4 to 5 years is up. Well we know what happened. Millions of people were not able to take out lower interest loans and so the existing high interest loans took effect which caused the mortgage to double. Of course people could not afford the mortgage and we saw on our nightly news, millions of people walking away from their homes. A lot of these loan that were issued by the banks in the USA were sold to foreign investors and most of these foreign investors own banks. Now because the consumers were not paying their mortgage this affected the investors bottom line and this caused a lot of businesses, expecially banks, to close at a rapid pace. Ultimately it contributed to the worldwide recession. So my bothers and sisters, credit affects any and everything. For more info visit this link 1-888-807-1892 www.hishermoneytalk.com

It took just over one year but Jamaicas football programme finally has a kit sponsorship deal after the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) announced a US$2-million (J$172 million) three-year deal with Italian outfitters Kappa. The JFF had been in discussion with the Turin-based sports goods manufacturers for the better part of last year about an extension to their previous arrangement which ran its course on December 31, 2010. Interestingly, Kappa, which is listed under the umbrella of parent company Basic Net and is the largest equipment manufacturer in Italy with 250 stores in that country alone, is exploring the possibility of setting up shop in Jamaica, with the idea of a Super Store, complemented by restaurant and bar facilities being discussed. Though the full details of the deal were not revealed, Kappa has agreed to hand over a US$350,000 (J$30 million) bonus to the JFF if the senior team qualifies to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Kappa will also provide a full range of equipment and gear to all nine male and female teams in the programme. The development comes right in time for Jamaicas June 8 FIFA World Cup qualifier curtain-raiser against Guatemala, and JFF president Captain Horace Burrell, who just a few days after coming back from suspension signed on the dotted line in Turin in the presence of president and owner of Basic Net, Marco Baglione, as well as JFF general secretary Horace Reid. New Kits Kappa is expected to present Jamaica with their new kits by April of this year. The Reggae Boyz will be involved in three friendly internationals before then: Cuba on February 22 and 24 in Kingston and Montego Bay, respectively, before an overseas engagement with New Zealand on the 29th. Burrell was excited by the development and described it as a great plug for the development of Jamaican football. Im extremely elated at the signing of this deal, and indeed this is a great day for Jamaicas football programme, said Burrell.
MUMBAI, India (CMC/ IANS): Estranged West Indies batsman Chris Gayle inked a new deal yesterday with Ban-galore Royal Challengers (RCB) for the next two seasons of the Indian Premier League. Gayle was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders for the first three seasons of the lucrative tournament, but he went unsold in last years players auction. This proved to be a slice of good fortune for RCB and Gayle. He later joined the franchise as an injury replacement player for Australian left-arm fast bowler Dirk Nannes. When Fletchers direct hit at the strikers end ran Dwayne Smith out for three in the fourth over, Barbados were seven for four and had added just 10 more runs at the halfway stage of the innings. Alcindor Holder joined left-hander Jonathan Carter, and they added 68 for the fifth wicket to add some beef to the Barbados total. Windwards conceded their first boundary in the 12th over, when Holder struck a six over deep backward square leg off Windwards and West Indies captain Darren Sammy, whose mediumfast bowling yielded 28 runs in four overs. BRIDGETOWN, Barbados, CMC A record spell from Delorn Johnson undermined Barbados batting and set Windward Islands up for an emphatic, seven-wicket victory to finish third in the Caribbean Twenty20 tournament on Sunday. The tall, left-arm fast bowler from St. Vincent & the Grenadines captured an amazing five wickets for five runs from his allotted four overs, as Barbados, choosing to bat, were dismissed for a modest 101 in their allocation of 20 overs in the Consolation Final at Kensington Oval. Andre Fletcher and fellow Grenadian Devon Smith followed up with a determined, secondwicket stand of 67 that paved the way for the Windwards to reach their target with 13 balls remaining. Johnson, a graduate of the Sagicor West Indies High Performance Centre, produced easily the best
spell of bowling in a regional Twenty20 match. He also tied with Anil Kumble for the 11th best figures in a T20 ever, the Indian leg-spinning legend finishing with the same figures for Royal Challengers Bangalore against Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League two years ago. Johnson turned the match into a genuine nocontest, when he snared Barbados captain Kirk Edwards, all-rounder Kevin Stoute and wicketkeeper/batsman Shane Dowrich in his first over, rocking the home team on four runs for three wickets. Trinidad and Tobago continued to dominate regional T20 cricket, capturing their second title in just the third edition of the WICBs latest regional tournament. The Trinis comprehensively defeated Jamaica by 63 runs to take the Caribbean T20 title and secure a place in the Champions League later this year. Combined with their success dating back to the days of the Stanford tournament Trinidad has now won three regional T20 titles. Opting to bat first after winning the toss Trinidad and Tobago reached a formidable 168 for six on the strength of Dwayne Bravos belligerent 49 off 43 balls and Kieron Pollards robust unbeaten 39 off 13 deliveries. Pollard smashed four sixes and a four, three of the sixes in the final over of the innings bowled by Krishmar Santokie. In reply Jamaica struggled to 105 for five with Carlton Baugh Jnr top scoring with an unbeaten 39 off 23 balls. before Holder was run out for 24 in the 16th over and Charles bowled Carter with a full-length delivery for the top score of 42 that included two fours and three sixes from 53 balls. An expensive final over from Garey Mathurin, which cost 11 and included Sulieman Benn hitting a six over long-on, allowed Barbados to inch closer to the 100-run threshold before the home team lost their last three wickets in the final over Johnson collecting two to complete the demolition.

POLITICAL and business leaders continued paying tribute to Ambassador Dudley Thompson on the weekend, recalling his deep involvement in Pan-African issues and hailing him for his intellect. Thompson died in New York on January 20th of a heart attack. He was 95. Former Prime Minister Edward Seaga, who contested the Kingston Western constituency against Thompson in the 1962 and 1967 general elections described Thompson as the foremost Pan-Africanist in Jamaica who involved himself in African affairs for the betterment of the future of the continent, as well as to keep Africa alive in the minds and interest of the multitude of Jamaican people of African origin. Both of these missions, Seaga said, were essential to our deeper understanding of a more Afrocentric Jamaica through the roots Thompson planted and the fruits they have borne. Seaga also recalled the election contests, noting that the 1962 poll was the first for himself and Thompson. The contest, which I won, was based on my understanding of Jamaican folk life; his on the understanding of Africa. He dubbed himself The Burning Spear after Jomo Kenyata, the liberator of Kenya who he helped to defend in court, Seaga said. The contest turned violent when he resumed his challenge in the general election of 1967. But one of the most important outcomes was that Dudley and myself thereafter developed a very pleasant personal friendship which extended throughout the rest of his life, Seaga said. Seaga acknowledged that this portrayal of Thompson as a man with a personal touch is possibly

some years ago. Dudley Thompsons vast intellect, gift of persuasion and his passion for social justice and equality found comfort in the PNP, especially at the time when the party, under the leadership of former President and Prime Minister Michael Manley sought to bring ordinary Jamaicans into the centre of government and governance, the PNP said. He was also one of the partys principal architects then, to advance its progressive internationalist foreign policy, in the effort to address the economic inequalities which existed between developing and developed countries, the PNP added. It noted that Thompson gave selfless service in the public sector, epitomized by his appointment as an ambassador who served Jamaica with distinction. It was during this time, and especially when he served as Jamaicas ambassador to Nigeria, that he sought, in keeping with his growing belief in Pan-Africanism, to strengthen and deepen the relationship between Jamaica and other African countries, the PNP said. The party said it was deeply honored to have had a comrade like Thompson among its ranks, and extended condolence to his wife, children and other members of his family.
