COURSEDESCRIPTION
ThiscourseisdesignedasanintroductiontograduatestudyinOrganizationalCommunication.Thisintroductionwillincludeanoverviewofassumptions,values,theoriesandconceptsincommunication.
In
addition,studentswillsurveybasicresearchmethodologies,focusingonqualitativeresearchmethods.Finally,thiscoursewillintroducestudentstotheacademicresearchandwritingprocessesinvolvedintheinvestigationofcommunicationinavarietyoforganizationalcontexts.Thespecificgoalsofthiscourseareto:1.Exposestudentstothevariousdisciplinesandtheoreticalapproachestothestudyofcommunication.2.Familiarizestudentswithbasicresearchmethodologies,thestructureofacademicresearch,andtheskillsnecessarytointerpretandcriticallyevaluatecommunicationresearchusingcompetentandethicalmethods.3.Developacademicthinking,research,andwritingskillsasitpertainstoinvestigatingandanalyzingcommunicationinorganizationalsettings.

Expectations:Atthegraduate-level,Iexpectstudentstocometoclassreadytodiscuss,analyze,critique,andapplycourse-relatedmaterial.Givenwemeetonlyonceaweek,eachclassperiodisvitallyimportanttoyourabilitytodowellinthecourse.Moreover,youractiveandongoingparticipationthroughoutthecourseisessentialtoenhancingbothyourownsuccessandthatoftheoverallclassexperience.Mygoalwillbetointroduceyoutograduatelevelstudiesandprovideyouthebasicknowledgeandskillsnecessarytoexplore,study,andcontributetothefieldofcommunicationandtoyourparticularareaofinterest/expertise/audience.Moreover,Ihopetointroduceyoutothecommunicationmethodsandapproachesthatwillhelpyoubestunderstandandstudythecommunicationphenomenayouaremostinterestedin.2.WrittenWork:

additiontobringingahardcopyofassignmentstoclass,pleasesubmitanelectroniccopy(emailto:whitez@queens.edu)ofallwrittendocumentsby6p.m.ontheassignedday.Anyassignmentssubmittedtomeafterthattimewillbeconsideredlate.Typically,lateassignmentsareloweredonelettergradeforeachclassmeetingaftertheassignedduedate.Ifyouknowyouwillmissclassforanyreasonwhenanassignmentisdue,youmustsubmitthecompletedassignmentBEFOREyouleavetoreceivecredit.WrittenworkmustbeTYPEDandPROOFREADforerrors.Handwrittenassignmentswillnotbeaccepted(unlessotherwisespecified).WrittenassignmentsarerequiredtofollowtheAPAformat.Forexample,typedassignmentsshouldbe11-to12-pointfontsize,TimesNewRoman,double-spaced,andoneinchmargins--afewofthebasicguidelinesforAPAformat.Besuretokeepacopyofallmajorassignmentsforyourrecords.3.ClassAttendance:Agreatdealoflearninginthiscoursecomesfromin-classdiscussions,soitisessentialthatyouattendclassconsistently.Morethan1unexcusedabsencewillresultinadeductionofparticipationpoints.Thiscoursemeets13timesover
