roduct obtained by the

 yrolysis of coal in the absence of air is known as volatile matter.

roduct may contain hydrogen, methane, carbon mono

ide, higher hydrocarbons, tar, water va

ors, nitrogen, ammonia, hydrogen sul

hideetc. Volatile matter does not contain the moisture of coal but it contains water that is formedfrom the hydrogen and o

 ygen of coal during the decom

osition.It is measured

ractically by determining the loss of weight .
Procedure:
 1)
 
 Weigh the crucible and lid together.2)
 
Put near 1 gm sam
p
le and weigh the crucible with its lid.3)
 
Insert the crucible with the lid on it into the furnace at 900
0
C
and kee
p
there fora
p
eriod of 7 minutes.4)
 
T
ake out the crucible from the furnace and allow it to cool in the desiccators.5)
 
 Weigh the crucible with the lid to know the weight loss due to e
xp
ulsion of  volatile matter.
