The Distinguished Lecture Series in Statistical Science (DLSS)
Te Fields Institute in Toronto annually hosts the prestigious Distinguished Lecture Series
in Statistical Science (DLSS). Next years Distinguished Lecturer is JianqingFan, Frederick
L. Moore Professor of Finance, Director of Committee of Statistical Studies, Department
of Operation Research and Financial Engineering, Princeton University.
Te lecture series is provisionally scheduled for May, and will be on the topic of Analysis
of Ultrahigh dimensional data: Spurious correlation and sparsity.
Te lecture series has been held annually since 2000, and consists of one general lecture
and one more specialized lecture by an internationally prominent statistical scientist.
Past distinguished lecturers include David Spiegelhalter, Persi Diaconis, Elizabeth
Tompson, Bradley Efron, David Cox, Don Dawson, Donald Fraser, and Peter Hall.
Lehighs Everett Pitcher Lectures
Te next series of Everett Pitcher Lectures
will be held March 22-25, 2010, on the
campus of Lehigh University in Bethlehem,
Pennsylvania. Te speaker will be Professor
RickDurrett of Cornell University. He will
speak on Tree Faces of Probability, with
three lectures on:
(i) Improbabilities (March 22),
(ii) Life on a random graph (March 23),
and
(iii) Cancer models (March 25).
Durrett, whose research focuses on
probability problems that come from
ecology and genetics, has fathered 40
academic children and written eight books.
He was elected to the National Academy of
Sciences in 2007.
Te lectures, which are free and open
to the public, are held in honor of Everett
Pitcher, who was secretary of the AMS
from 1967 until 1988. Pitcher served in
the mathematics department at Lehigh
University from 1938 until 1978, when
he retired as Distinguished Professor of
Mathematics.
For further information, contact the
Everett Pitcher Lecture Series, Department
of Mathematics, Lehigh University,
Bethlehem, PA, 18015; telephone the
department on 610-758-3731; or see the
website: http://www.lehigh.edu/~math/
pitcher.html.
LukeBornn, a PhD student in the
Department of Statistics at the University
of British Columbia, Canada, has won
a Michael Smith Foundation for Health
Research Trainee Award. Competition
for these awards was very keen this year:
only 73 of the 706 applications were
successful. Te program supports highly-
qualifed Masters, PhD and Post-doctoral
trainees, and prepares them for careers as
independent health researchers. Lukes link
to health research stems from his work on
modeling space-time processes, some of
which have been shown to be hazardous to
human health and welfare. His research is
being done with his UBC co-supervisors
ArnaudDoucet and JimZidek.

Error and Inference
Recent Exchanges on Experimental
Reasoning, Reliability, and the Objectivity
and Rationality of Science
Edited by
DEBORAH G. MAYO and
ARIS SPANOS
This is a wonderful volume. It contains original
and stimulating essays by leading gures from
both philosophy and statistics on notions of
evidence and testing; on how these interact with
ideas about causation, explanation, and scientic
rationality; and much more besides. The volume
also features detailed and illuminating exchanges
between the contributors. A must-read for
anyone with an interest in these topics.

Elementary Probability
for Applications
RICK DURRETT
The book has a nice interplay between
probability modeling and scientic applications,
whether from biology, sports, or discussions of
Chinas one-child policy. Many of the examples
are thought provoking, including ones on DNA
samples for paternity cases and others about
the O.J. Simpson trial. As an instructor, I enjoy
digging into these examples in class. And the
large selection of interesting problems builds
basic skills and deepens or extends the main
ideas.

Employment Opportunities around the world
The Department of Statistics at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications and
nominations for the Eberly Family Endowed Chair. This unique position is the first endowed
chair in the department, and was held since its inception in 1988 by Professor C. R. Rao, now
Eberly Professor Emeritus of Statistics.
Candidates with an exceptional record of achievement and research leadership in any area of
statistics and with credentials appropriate to a tenured full professorship will be considered.
Candidates will be expected to take an active role of intellectual leadership in the department.
Candidates with interests in the life sciences (e.g. genomics, infectious disease research,
neuroscience) and environmental issues (e.g. energy, climate research) will be able to connect
to a rich collaborative setting and a number of university-wide initiatives playing an important
role in future departmental hiring in these areas.
The Department faculty members are engaged in a wide variety of research areas including
multivariate analysis, likelihood theory, computational methods, biostatistics and statistical
genomics, environmental statistics, astrostatistics, etc., through departmental centers
(http://www.stat.psu.edu/centers/), our Statistical Consulting Center, and several university-wide

Comparative Genomics and Bioinformatics, http://www.bx.psu.edu/, the Center for Infectious
Disease Dynamics, http://www.cidd.psu.edu/ -- see also other units in the Huck Institutes for the
Life Sciences, http://www.lsc.psu.edu/). Penn State is a $750 million/year research enterprise,
most of it at the University Park campus.
The Department offers Bachelor's, Master's, and Doctoral degrees in Statistics. It is part of the
Eberly College of Science, and is housed in a modern technological classroom building,
completed in 1992. The building includes ample office space as well as computer labs, a library,
seminar rooms and a lounge.
The Pennsylvania State University is located in the center of the state, in a valley surrounded by
the Appalachian Mountains and state forest land. The adjoining town of State College is part of
a metropolitan area with ample health care, indoor and outdoor recreation, and excellent quality

Error and Inference
Recent Exchanges on Experimental
Reasoning, Reliability, and the Objectivity
and Rationality of Science
Edited by
DEBORAH G. MAYO and
ARIS SPANOS
This is a wonderful volume. It contains original
and stimulating essays by leading gures from
both philosophy and statistics on notions of
evidence and testing; on how these interact with
ideas about causation, explanation, and scientic
rationality; and much more besides. The volume
also features detailed and illuminating exchanges
between the contributors. A must-read for
anyone with an interest in these topics.

Elementary Probability
for Applications
RICK DURRETT
The book has a nice interplay between
probability modeling and scientic applications,
whether from biology, sports, or discussions of
Chinas one-child policy. Many of the examples
are thought provoking, including ones on DNA
samples for paternity cases and others about
the O.J. Simpson trial. As an instructor, I enjoy
digging into these examples in class. And the
large selection of interesting problems builds
basic skills and deepens or extends the main
ideas.
