Wood StoveExchange
One month intothe program, andthere have been 8vouchers issued, which let registeredretailers know that bearer is registeredin the program andentitled to the pricereduction.Retailers offer amin. 10% reduction off the regularappliance price. In addition, theNVWSE provides grants of $750 or half the cost of the stove, whichever is least— the best incentives in the province! This year’s goal is 30 changeouts. One of this year’s participants is MerrittFire Chief Dave Tompkinson. He was moti-vated to change out his old wood stove, notonly to help clear the air and burn lesswood, but to heat his home as safely as pos-sible. The Merritt Fire Department recentlyattended a nasty chimney fire where an oldstove and chimney chocked with creosotewere the culprits. Surprisingly there areusually several of these preventable fires inour area every winter. This year the NVWSE has grown toinclude the Nicola Valley from Dot toSpences Bridge, by including TNRD AreaI into the program. And with this last partof the Nicola Valley added to the program,it is now a comprehensive air shed project. The NVWSE is operated by a partner-ship formed by Min. of Environment, BCLung Assoc., City of Merritt, TNRD AreasI, M & N, participating First Nations com-munities and participating retailers, dis-tributors and manufacturers. Avalanche control
Closures of the Coq for the purposeof avalanche control are rare. Butextreme avalanche conditions in theCoquihalla Pass prompted the MoT tocarry out avalanche control on Friday. The Coq was closed from 9am-1pm between Merritt & Hope while 2 heli-copters deployed explosive charges to trigger avalanches on several avalanchepaths above the hwy. The snowpack at the ministry's high-level weather stationshows almost 150% of normal. Additionally, the cold weather followed by therecent warming trend elevated the avalanche hazard, while wind had blown snowonto avalanche paths, further increasing the load.

Coupon Heaven
While handing a 25 cents-off coupon to the supermarket clerk at the checkoutcounter, a woman inadvertently missed her hand, and the coupon slipped beneaththe scale and was gone. The checker looked distressed so the woman said,"That's OK - it's in coupon heaven now." "Coupon heaven?" the checker said."Yes," the woman said. "That's where coupons go when they die." "Only theredeemed ones!" said the checker.
