This week on my siteIm highlighting seaside resorts along the Brittany coast of France--which includes the Côte de Granit Rosea pink granitecoast unique in the world. Only in three other locations in Canada, Corsicaand China is the pricey pink rock found.The peninsula of Brittany (Bretagne in French) retains its Celtic charmsderived from Britons fleeing Anglo-Saxon invaders during the Dark Ages(approx. 450 to 1076 AD) across the English Channel. The famous fairy-tale castle in the seathe monastery of Mont-Saint-Michela UNESCOsite north of Brittanywas built in this era.Brittany is a core location of constructs from the Neolithic Age (approx 6,000-2,500 BC)--and fortified townslike the popular ancient walled port of Saint-Maloformerly a city of pirates and the birthplace of the famous author and statesman, Chateaubriand. There are also numerousscenic islands off the coast--some privately owned by celebrities.Surrounded by the sea--fresh fish is a staple of Bretagne cuisine--especially mussels and oysters. Another specialty are Galettesthincrepes made of buckwheat flour, and often filled with savory grilled sausagetypically served with cups of cider.
With temperate climate, warm summers and regular rain--thecountryside and forests are lushly green. And very much like here where I live in Carmel-by-the-Seadrive a short distance inland and discover rich farmland and agriculture.The TGV runs from Paris to Le Croisic a fishing port and our first stop.Le Croisic is on the Côte Sauvage (wild coast)with a population of about 4,000 (also like Carmel). It is 90-minutes from Nantes historically part of Brittanyand is now the capital of the neighboring Loire-Atlantique.With a population of 250,000Nantes is the 6th largest city in Francewith Time Magazine naming it the most livable city in France.Once a center of piracyLe Croisic is a quaint town of architectural character, with mansions that date from the 15

, and a number of upscalehotels that includes a Relais and Chateaux property--Le Fort de l'Océan.The 400-year old granite fort was built to withstand attacks and stormsand retains its original ramparts, moats and drawbridges.Besides its scenic beauty--in Le Croisic theres tennis, sailing, coastal paths for walkers and cyclists, an aquarium, and the beautiful peninsula toexplore. A farmers market is held here three times a week in the summer,and otherwise twice weekly. The catch of the day is also sold, fresh off arriving fishing vessels at the fish market.Everything comes from the reinvigorating seaincluding new dreams,renewed health, greater creativity.
