In 1633, Spanish artist Francisco de Zurbarán depicted a young bishop’s attempt to flee the troubles of his corrupt diocese for the solace of a Carthusian monastery. St. Hugo of Grenoble (1052-1132) was barely thirty when he arrived at the peaceful enclave, but the pope he served refused resignation. Hugo was fated for fifty years as bishop. Most of his time was tumultuous indeed. No doubt he deserved canonization soon after earthly demise.
