This is the power point of a presentation given at an event organized by the Jambi Arts Council in which the focus of the discussion was in part the state and potential of local museums and Melayu cultural heritage. It focused heavily on the problems facing potentially securing UNESCO World Heritage status because of the massive damage to the south bank of the site and the plans to further expand industry onto the north bank.

his power point documents a recent visit organized by the Jambi ArtsCouncil for myself and Dr. Fiona Kerlogue from the Horniman Museumin England.We visited the Jambi National Museum and the History Museum, metwith Government of Indonesian personnel from all relevantdepartments and visited the archaeological site of Mauro Jambi.

hepurpose was to examine the various challenges which exist for acultural revival in Jambi involving museums and museum educationprograms in particular as well as studying the progress of the bid forUNESCO heritage status for the site.We concluded that urgent local, national and internationalintervention is required to stop the continuing destruction of the siteby the coal and palm oil industry.
