THE BOOK OI BABALON

INTRODUCTION

This hook contains the record ol a maical experiment relatin to
the invocation ol an elemental, the therealter ol the Goddess or
Iorce called BABALON, and the results thereol. An appendix con-
tains some details ol the method, puhlished lor the lirst time.
The contents should he clear enouh to those who are prepared lor
understandin, and a little study and ellort should make it so
lor those who desire understandin. Ior the rest, each will no
douht interpret it in accord with his own predilections.

A note on the underlyin philosophy. The present ae is under the
inlluence ol the lorce called, in maical terminoloy, Horus.
This lorce relates to lire, Mars, and the sun, that is, to power,
violence, and enery. It also relates to a child, hein innocent
(i.e. undillerentiated). Its manilestations may he noted in the
destruction ol old institutions and ideas, the discovery and
liheration ol new eneries, and the trend towards power overn-
ments, war, homosexuality, inlantilism, and schizophrenia.

This lorce is completely hlind, dependin upon the men and women
in whom it manilests and who uide it. Ohviously, its uidance
now tends towards catastrophy.

The catastrophic trend is due to our lack ol understandin ol our
own natures. The hidden lusts, lears, and hatreds resultin lrom
the warpin ol the love ure, which underly the natures ol all
Western peoples, have taken a homicidal and suicidal direction.

This impasse is hroken hy the incarnation ol another sort ol
lorce, called BABALON. The nature ol this lorce relates to love,
understandin, and dionysian lreedom, and is the necessary coun-
terhalance or correspondence to the manilestation ol Horus.

It is indicated that this lorce is actually incarnate in some
livin woman, as the result ol the descrihed maical operation. A
more hasic matter, however, is the indication that this lorce is
incarnate in all men and women, and needs only to he invoked to
lree the spirit lrom the dehris ol the old aeon, and to direct
the hlind lorce ol Horus into constructive channels ol under-
standin and love. The methods ol this invocation are descrihed
in the text.

The hackround ol this material may he lound in the Book ol the
Law, the Comment thereon, and other writins ol Aleister Crowley,
also in various maical, anthropoloical, psycholoical, and
philosophical texts. These are all necessary to an understandin
and use ol the material.

One lurther point. It should he rememhered that all human activi-
ties, alter the vital lunctions are lullilled, arise lrom the
need to love or to he loved. It is therlore quite literally true
that in understandin (i.e. that which emhraces all cateories ol
love) is all power iven. A rasp ol the principle ol hipolarity
should make this clear.

With this crude and rudimentary philosophical discourse, then, I
present the Book ol Bahalon.


A. CONCEPTION

In anuary q6 I had heen enaed in the study and practice ol
Maick lor seven years, and in the supervision and operation ol
an occult lode lor lour years, havin heen initiated into the
Sanctuary ol the Gnosis hy the Beast 666, Ira. a, and Ira.
Saturnus. At this time I decided upon a Maical operation de-
sined to ohtain the assistance ol an elemental mate. This is a
well known procedure in Maick (cl. Ch. VIII in Maick in Theory
and Practice), consistin ol the invocation ol a spirit or ele-
mental into tanihle existence hy various maical techniques.

I decided upon the use ol the Enochian Tahlets ohtained hy Dr.
Dee and Edward Kelley, employin the 'n'n'n square ol the Air
Tahlet. The technique was approximately as lollows.

a PM hy nine stron, rapid knocks. A tahle lamp at the opposite
corner ol the room was thrown violently to the lloor and hroken.
There was no window in this corner, and no wind was hlowin at
the time.

(Note. I have had little experience with phenomena ol this sort.
Maically speakin, it usually represents hreaks in the opera-
tion, indicatin imperlect technique. Actually, in any maical
opeation there should he no phenomena hut the willed result.)

an . The liht system ol the house lailed ahout q PM. Another
maician who had heen stayin at the house and studyin with me,
was carryin a candle across the kitchen when he was struck
stronly on the riht shoulder, and the candle knocked out ol his
hand. He called us, and we ohserved a hrownish yellow liht ahout
seven leet hih in the kitchen.

I hanished with a maical sword, and it disappeared. His riht
arm was paralyzed lor the rest ol the niht.

an . Invoked twice. At this time the Scrihe developed some
sort ol astral vision, descrihin in detail an old enemy ol mine
ol whom he had never heard, and later the uardian lorms ol Isis
and the Archanel Michael. Later, in my room, I heard the raps
aain, and a huzzin, metallic voice cryin let me o lree. I
lelt a reat pressure and tension in the house that niht, which
was also noticed hy the other occupants. There was no other
phenomena, and I admit a leelin ol disappointment.

The leelin ol tension and unease continued lor lour days. Then,
on anuary 8, at sunset, while the Scrihe and I were on the
Mojave desert, the leelin ol tension suddenly snapped. I turned
to him and said, it is done, in ahsolute certainty that the
operation was accomplished. I returned home, and lound a youn
woman answerin the requirements waitin lor me. She is descriha-
hle as an air ol lire type with hronze red hair, liery and suh-
tle, determined and ohstinate, sincere and perverse, with ex-
traordinary personality, talent, and intellience.

Durin the period ol anuary q to Iehruary ay I invoked the
Goddess BABALON with the aid ol my maical partner, as was proper
to one ol my rade.


B. COMMUNICATIONS

On Iehruary ay my maical partner went East lor a visit, and on
Ieh. a8 I went hack to the Mojave, invokin BABALON. Durin this
invocation, the presence ol the Goddess came upon me, and I was
commanded to write the lollowin communication.

ol the word and the cup.

C. BIRTH

|March a, q6 E.V.|

On March and a q6 I prepared the altar and equipment in
accordance with the instructions in Liher q. The Scrihe had heen
away ahout a week, and knew nothin ol my invocations ol BABALON,
which I had kept entirely secret. On the niht ol March a he
returned, and descrihed a vision he had that evenin ol a savae
and heautilul woman ridin naked on a reat cat-like heast. He
was impressed with the urent necessity ol ivin me some messae
or communication. We prepared maically lor this communication,
constructin a temple at the altar with the analysis ol the key
word. He was rohed in white, carryin the lamp, and I in hlack,
hooded, with the cup and daer. At his suestion we played
Rachmanninoll's Isle ol the Dead as hackround music, and set an
automatic recorder to transcrihe any audihle occurrences. At
approximately 8 PM he hean to dictate, I transcrihin directly
as I received.

THE SCRIBE. The Anel ol TARO. A three day retirement to reet
her. Purily thysell. The symhol is seven hy three. It is BABALON.
Keep secret. The communications are sacred.

These are the preparations. Green old cloth, lood lor the
Beast, upon a hidden platter, hack ol the altar. Disclose only

The lirst ritual. Tomorrow the second ritual. Concentrate all
lorce and hein in Our Lady BABALON. Liht a sinle liht on Her
altar, sayin. Ilame is Our Lady, llame is Her hair. I am llame.

A plate ol lood, unsalted. An altar cloth hitherto undeliled.

Make a hox ol hlackness at ten o'clock. Smear the vessel which
contains llame with thine own hlood. Destroy at the altar a thin
ol value. Remain in perlect silence, and heed the voice ol Our
Lady. Speak not ol this ritual or ol Her comin to any person.
Il asked, answer in a manner that avoids suspicion. Nor speculate
at any time as to Her luture mortal identity. To receive llatter-

On the niht ol the lirst perlormance ol these rituals, I pre-
pared the altar and hox and lood, also llowers and wine. At the
heinnin ol the rituals, I hurnt the Enochian Tahlet and smashed
an imae ol Pan, a lavorite possession. (Ahout this time the rool
on my uest house cauht lire lrom a laulty chimney, and was
partly destroyed.)

I proceeded with the rituals, notin a mountin tension, and the
sense ol a presence inexpressihly poinant and desirahle. There
was no other manilestation. At twelve PM I put the three ques-
tions and received answers as lollows.

wet nursin. She has demonstrated the nature ol woman to you in
such unequivocal terms that you should have no lurther room lor
