Salmon and all marine lie are a vital resource to Indigenous people, and to coastalcommunities and British Columbia as a whole.Wild salmon in particular is an iconic species that needs to be managed sustainably.Salmon is the cornerstone ood source or many First Nations communities and provideessential nutrients to bears, eagles, and many other species when they return to their birthrivers to spawn. Many seaood suppliers, retailers and restaurants recognize the need or sustainability inthis area. They well understand how the seaood industry is in peril i something is notdone switly to reduce these risks. Not only does the uture o tourism and sports fshing industries along Canada’s westcoast depend on this action, our communities and wildlie deserve no less.
In Context
Reckless policies have resulted in increased threats to wild salmon habitat and haveailed our fsheries and local economies. The Harper Conservatives are promoting rapiddepletion o non-renewable resources and transerring wealth rom local economies tomultinational corporations. Their support o tanker trafc on the sensitive North Coasthas allowed fsh arms to prolierate without knowing the risks or properly monitoring theimpacts, and have ailed to protect reshwater habitat.A scientifc study or the Cohen Commission ound that climate change poses a majorthreat to the uture survival o BC’s wild salmon stock. In order to protect wild salmonand other marine lie, we need a concise plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions andaddress the threat o climate change.Marine protected areas and sustainable aquaculture are essential to the protection o wildsalmon. Our ragile ocean/coastal ecosystems are threatened, and salmon migration andbreeding patterns are disrupted, by: open-net salmon aquaculture, an overall ailure toprotect crucial marine habitat, raw sewage, and industrial run-o.
