Where the Utica Might (Not) Be In New York
Shown below is a map of the Utica Shale in New York State.The Utica is below the Marcellus, and notas thoroughly understood as the Marcellusin New York State. There are indicationsfrom test wells that it is “over-mature” inmuch of the state, including most of Central New York and the Catskills. Uticatest wells in Otsego County andChenango County seem to confirm that.

Eliminating the Utica Shale areas that appear to be over-mature,leaves the western part of the state with primarily dry gas, which isnot economic at current or projected prices.

The 2,000 foot minimum depth limit removes the shore of LakeOntario, and the Utica’s extreme depth at the border counties arelikely to make it uneconomic at projected gas prices.
