PRELIMINARY DESIGN OF AMPHIBIOUS CRAFT

ABSTRACT
This work is to present conceptual design of an amphibious craft that has great reliability andterrain capabilities. This craft is designed to operate like ATV (all-terrain vehicle) that can travel atextreme environment with a suspension system designed to move on uneven surfaces. The differenceis, this craft has amphibious capability that can travel both land and water, where practical ATV can’tdo. In this work consists the calculation that involves in determining the center of gravity, hydrostaticforce, wheel size, engine power, stability assessment and initial costs for development an amphibiouscraft. Finally, it is proposed that this concept can be improved in the future because it has the potentialto be applied in Malaysia as a recreational craft or craft that can be used for patrol and surveillance bythe authorities.

1.0 INTRODUCTION
Tourism industry in Malaysia has beentraditionally concentrated and promotedtowards international markets since its infancystage in 1960s. Until todays, the tourism sectorhas grown tremendously and has been rankedthe second largest foreign income earnersbehind manufacturing in 2000 and itssubsequent years [Tourism Malaysia, 2003].Despite the importance of alluring more andmore international travelers to visit Malaysia, the domestic front cannot be overlooked fortheir vast benefits and numerous untappedpotentials. After a string of crises that effectinternational arrivals on recent years, thedomestic tourism industry in Malaysia startedto be given priority by the Malaysiangovernment. One of the activities of the tourismsector is extreme sports has grown extensivelytoday. This sport involves driving ATVs in theappearance of challenging terrain, for examplein the forest and coast. Tourists can enjoy thebeauty of nature through this activity. As weknow, Malaysia consists of a variety of uniqueterrain, which consists of mangrove swamps, lakes, rivers and others. But in this situation,ATV vehicle have a problem through the riverand swamp areas, because, ATV unable tofloat on water with small and heavy wheel. Sothe solution needs to be done by introducing avehicle that is capable of amphibian throughswamps and rivers without any problem. Thisvehicle is capable to drive at terrain area andalso on water which other ATV can’t do.
2.0 AN AMPHIBIOUS VEHICLE
An amphibious vehicle (or simplyamphibian), is a vehicle or craft, that is ameans of transport, viable on land as well ason water – just like an amphibian. This definition applies equally to anyland and water transport, small or large, powered or unpowered, ranging fromamphibious bicycles, ATVs, cars, buses, trucks, RVs, and military vehicles, all the wayto the very largest hovercraft. Classic landingcraft are generally not considered amphibiousvehicles, although they are part of amphibiousassault.
