McCormick junior Patrick Schnettler

admits he may not be the most media-

friendly guy. Television has no place in
his busy schedule. But the Interfraternity
Council president-elect spared a few
moments to share his love for 90s bands
and give his grandmother a shout-out on
her latest book.
Excerpts:
THE CURRENT: What are three songs youd put
on a mix tape of your life right now?
Patrick Schnettler: Ive always been a huge
Dispatch fan. I think Bang Bang would
be an all-time favorite. eyre a s band.
All my favorite music is s bands. Its what
I grew up with and I kind of stuck to that. I
think Free Fallin by Tom Petty, its a clas-
sic, and Semi-Charmed Life by ird Eye
Blind. It was stuck in my head all day.
THE CURRENT: Last movies you saw that you
loved or hated?
PS: e last movie that I saw was The Mup-
pets. It was kind of entertaining but at the
same time, a complete waste of . My
roommate made me watch A Clockwork
Orange and it totally creeped me out. Ive
had nightmares ever since.
THE CURRENT: Lets talk about the Internet.
Fill in the blank. If you got paid for brows-
ing _______, youd be a millionaire.
PS: is is kind of funny. Weather.com. I
obsessively check weather.com and I have
absolutely no idea why Im really concerned
about what the weathers going to be like at
a.m., but that is a habit of mine.
THE CURRENT: What is the last book you read
that wasnt for class?
PS: e last one I read was my grand-
mothers book, Reaching for Venus by Mary
Schnettler. She uses a lot of family stu to
inspire her stories and her characters, so its
interesting. ere isnt a character based on
me or my uncle but its a mesh of people.
ats the way she explained it to me, and
I saw that as well.

Six years ago, the only thing Lorenzo
Mascherini and James Watson were frost-
ing was glass.
The two first went into business
together in , designing linens and
small household furniture items, but were
quickly discouraged by friends and family
members who voiced concerns about the
sluggish housing market.
Aer renting an Evanston storefront,
the two discussed their prospects in the
furniture market and decided to reassess
their decision.
What can we do that people will
enjoy all year round, no matter what the
economic conditions are? Watson said.
Food. Good food.
e next day, I Dream of Sweets was
born and this past Monday, the bistro
relocated to a bigger space at Noyes
St., just a half mile from campus. Now
operating with a fully functional kitchen,
Mascherini and Watson are able to oer
Evanston a restaurant with a mix of travel
and home. e dining area oers inte-
rior design reminiscent of your neigh-
bors living room: creatively mismatched
stools, chairs, tables and couches. e
walls are lined with gleaming mirrors,
vintage radios and childhood games.
While familiarity characterizes the feel of
I Dream of Sweets, Mascherini and Wat-
son mix it up by oering comfort food
from faraway places youve only seen in
coee table books.
e menu is a fusion of Southern com-
fort food and European inuences from
the Florence-born Mascherini. It boasts
delicacies like homemade sweet potato
poundcake and baked mac and cheese.
Its a small operation with fewer than
employees; Mascherini and Watson
do the most of the cooking themselves.
And although neither of them attended
culinary school, both are sure they learned
all they needed to know from growing up
watching their mothers in the kitchen.
Mascherini and Watson are dedicated
to their business, looking to oer the
Evanston community a gathering place
that feels like home. ey spent months
perfecting the dcor, each piece speci-
cally selected and arranged to create the
most welcoming vibe.
Were here several hours of the day,
Watson said. So it needs to feel like home
to us.
Leslie Luning and her four-year-old
daughter, Jenet, snacked on a chocolate
chip cookie while waiting for friends.
Its great! Luning said. We really
could use a place like this.
Although they had not visited the old
location, Luning expressed her excitement
about having a new option for ice cream.
Over the next few months, Mascherini
and Watson are planning to oer events
to the community such as an exhibition
by photographer Hugo Forte. As the
discussion turned towards community
outreach, the two became enthused with
the prospects of live music, Monday night
movies and Flamenco performances.
ey voiced dreams of the walls being
covered with local artistry, not the uni-
form variations of brown seen in other
coee houses.
Mascherini and Watson eventually
realized their dreams, though the tools
they used to get there changed from ham-
mers and screwdrivers to pastry bags
along the way. Hoping to become an inte-
gral place in the Evanston community, the
two oer a piece of their home with each
pastry from I Dream of Sweets.

THATS MY
Patrick Schnettler
This week were obsessed with...
REALITY TV
sweetspot
I sat down with my bracket and started
lling it in. Who would make it to the
end? Who would get cut early on? Aer
a little research and a lot of guesswork, I
had nally narrowed it down to one
the winnerthe woman who would get
the nal rose, and most likely, a televised
marriage proposal and gigantic Neil Lane
engagement ring.
Cleary, Im not talking about March
Madness or any other sports tourna-
ment. For me, the most interesting thing
to predict on television is the outcome of
reality shows. To be honest, e Bach-
elor brackets that my best friend and I
lled out were made more in jest than as
a sign that we believe that the series, now
in its th season, can actually result in
true love. But, week aer week, we still
watch it.
Admitting that I watch e Bachelor
(and a lot of the shows that I follow) is
di cult at times, especially during the
obligatory introductions at the begin-
ning of almost every RTVF class I take.
While some of my classmates are naming
obscure, avant-garde or foreign lms as
their favorites in an eort to appear to
have the most highbrow, rened taste (or
maybe theyre just that cool), Im thanking
my lucky stars they dont know about all
my not-so-guilty pleasure reality televi-
sion show addictions.
Needless to say, there is a giant stigma
attached to so-called lowbrow television.
While I understand how ridiculous such
shows can be, I think that they are
still an important part of our
culture. If . million people
tuned in last week to watch
MTVs gang of glowing
st-pumpers on the h
season premiere of Jersey
Shore, thats got to say
something about our
society, and there has to
be a reason. While one could
argue that the taste of average
audiences has declined so much
that only pure ridiculousness
captures their attention, this
phenomenon can also oer a sort of
insight into the human condition. Perhaps
audiences enjoy watching absurd charac-
ters and over-the-top lifestyles because
they serve as a sort of escape from mun-
dane, everyday life.
is quarter, Im taking a class taught
by RTVF assistant professor Max Dawson
about reality television through the lens of
the highly successful CBS hit Survivor. I
cant explain how excited I am to study a
genre so underrepresented, especially in
the academic world. I think that Professor
Dawson, and the course in general, will
really break some ground in the way stu-
dents, and hopefully those outside Louis
Hall , look at reality television.
But from a purely non-intellectual
standpoint, I love these reality shows
simply because they depict the polar
opposite of realityboth my reality and
the reality of many others. Never in my
life will I drink and party like the cast
members of Jersey Shore or e Real
World. Although it would doubtlessly be
a life-changing experience, Im much too
content with heat, electricity and indoor
plumbing to audition for a spot on Sur-
vivor. And thank goodness I dont have
toI can experience these things vicari-
ously through reality stars, observe their
antics like some sort of poorly-designed
psychology or sociology experiment and
then go back to being me.
Even bachelor Ben knows that reality
television is not the same as real life.
In the rst episode of the latest
season of e Bach-
elor, new bachelor
Ben Flajnik mused,
Ive never juggled
women in his
wannabe-senti-
mental, overly
cheesy introduc-
tion. Really, Ben?
Dating women at the
same time isnt something
youre used to? Huh, thats interesting.

Youi New Yeais iesolution to eat
healthiei may have alieady gone bust
duiing Sundays dining hall hot cookie
bai. If it hasnt, Im impiessed with youi
self-discipline. Howevei, just because
you have one gluttonous day does not
mean the iest of the yeai is lost. You can
defnitely make healthy dining choices,
even when eating out, without saciifc-
ing taste.
In Chicago and Evanston, iestau-
iants like Union Sushi, Hota, and yes,
Edzos Buigei Shop, can help you ease
the guilt of that cookie binge.
If youie out foi sushi at Union
Sushi + Baibecue Bai (io W Eiie St.,
Chicago), tiy black instead of white
iice in youi maki ioll. Teies a dollai
upchaige pei ioll, but its totally woith
it. Black iice doesnt quite have the nutty
taste of biown iice, but its fimei than
white iice. At Union, Chef Chao cooks
his black iice with a little vinegai to
enhance the favoi. With fewei caloiies
and caibohydiates and moie piotein,
fbei and antioxidants, black iice wins
easily in nutiition. In my none-too-
scientifc taste test, black iice tasted
bettei too. Heie, favoi and health go
hand-in-hand. Evanston sushi joints
like Koi, Kansaku and Sashimi Sashimi
dont ofei black iice yet, so youll have
to head to Union in Rivei Noith.
Newly-opened Hota (i,, Piaiiie
Ave., Evanston), which used to be Jackys
on Piaiiie, ofeis healthy gouimet din-
ing at a college piice point. Te piiciest
lunch entiee is steak with aiugula at
1o. Ive got my eye on the baiiamundi
with a cuied lemon-tahini sauce and
couscous-chickpea salad (1). Sand-
wiches, including the Mediteiianeo
(11) with oystei mushiooms, smoked
squash, fiesh mozzaiella and paisley-
oiegano salsa, aie seived on eithei a
Bennisons baguette oi souidough that
Chef Jonadab Silva makes himself. Silva
says he caiefully consideis the nutii-
tional content of all his dishes, tiying to
ciaf a well-iounded meal full of favoi.
Youll eat well at Hota, but not at the
expense of youi waistline oi wallet.
You can even fnd healthful items
in the least likely of places. Take my
peiennial favoiite, Edzos Buigei Shop
(1,,1 Sheiman Ave., Evanston). Suie,
I geneially get an eight ounce chai-
buigei, tium e fiies and a milkshake,
but did you know that Edzos seives up
a ieally tasty poitobello buigei (.,)
too: Skip the bland Moiningstai veg-
gie patty foi maiinated poitobello cap
topped with ioasted peppeis, onions
and a little heib mayo. You can even
ask Eddie to hold the mayo if you
must. Gianted, going to Edzos with
the objective of eating a healthy low-
caloiie meal is a little like handing youi
AmEx black caid to a shopaholic with
instiuctions to window shop. So not
happening. Im not suggesting you go
in with the goal of eating healthy, but
foi those with moie will powei than
me, it is possible.

Ah, shopping. Coming out of the
holiday season, its not something most
people want to think about, let alone do.
But as the hoiioi of fiantic baigain hunt-
eis and inhumane ciowds weais of, most
of us will ventuie back out into the ietail
woild all too soon. Now that its Januaiy,
weie seeing biight, new iesoit oi pie-
spiing collections on the foois of oui
favoiite stoies. So just as youie getting
settled into youi knee-length-oi-longei
paika, the saitoiial gods begin taunting
you with waim weathei biights and youie
obviously going to want to shop. Im not
heie to discouiage some ietail theiapy
when wintei blues and too many layeis
(and not the good kind) get you down.
Im heie to help.
Too often, by the time its waim
enough to weai the peifect spiing piece
you bought in the dead of wintei, its been
shoved into the waidiobe com n, tags and
all. Well, I have the peifect solution foi
youi puichasing woes and its moie useful
than youi ciedit caid on any shopping tiip
you make: its the two outft iule.
Next time you fnd youiself in the
fuoiescence of a stoie with puichase
potential, stop befoie you pick up that
cute item you just have to have, and think.
Pictuie that item, whatevei it may be, with
two difeient combinations of clothes you
alieady have in youi closet. Tis insuies
that you will have something to weai it
with (without spending any extia money).
If you buy it, you wont get boied because
you have moie than one way to weai it.
Dangeis abound when you buy an item
with an outft of othei items you have yet
to buy in mindwhat if those othei items
dont exist: Imagining a potential buy
with clothes you alieady own will give
you ways to iemix youi waidiobe and will
save you fiom spending money only to
send youi not de-tagged item of clothing
to the closet moigue.
As an additional tip, be cieative with
youi two outft imagination. If Im buy-
ing a top, I ofen tiy to think of a day
outft and a night outft to maximize
the occasions foi the shiit. You can also
imagine a seasonal tiansition, which will
be helpful when buying spiing clothes
in Januaiy. How can you weai youi new
buy befoie its as waim as the happy
people playing in the catalogs weaiing
whatevei you just bought: If you take
this into account, , youll get moie weai
out of something youie loving iight now
foi the piice.
As someone who can nevei pack a
suitcase undei the ,o pound limit, Ive
found that when you employ the two out-
ft iule, youll nevei look with disdain at
youi waidiobe and whine about having
nothing to weai. You also wont staie long-
ingly at a new item of clothing, willing the
lifeless gaiment to automatically inspiie
the iest of an impeccable ensemble.
io1i piomises to be a landmaik yeai
in consumei electionics. As last yeais
(oi last months) geneiation of devices
become obsolete, heie aie a few updates
to watch out foi:
1. e iPhone . Following Apples
established updated pattein of new
iPhone, modified veision of that
iPhone, and then newei iPhone, weie
piobably going to see the iPhone , and
its piobably going to be on shelves this
autumn oi next wintei. Safe bets foi
new featuies include G data and NFC,
which will allow you to foiego ciedit
caids and use youi phone to make
tiansactions, ieally simplifying things
foi muggeis.
i. e iPad . Te iPad i came out
in Maich io11, so its extiemely likely
that well see Apples new iPad in a few
months. Apples modus opeiandi with
these annual updates seems to be focus-
ing on giadual impiovements iathei
than ievolutionaiy changes, so the iPad
will piesumably featuie an impiovement
in piocessoi powei and stoiage capac-
ity. Te iPad i will likely be made much
cheapei to compete moie diiectly with
competitois such as the Kindle Fiie.
. Wii U. Nintendos stiange, soita-
tablet-based next geneiation console is
expected to be ieleased in the second
half of io1i. Its most exciting new fea-
tuie is its contiollei, which has a o.i
inch touch scieen on a motion-sensing,
tablet-like body. Only one of these con-
tiolleis can be used at a time on the Wii
U and appaiently whatevei game youie
playing can be stieamed stiaight to the
contiolleis scieen, allowing useis to
view additional infoimation about the
game theyie playing. Nintendo plans on
allowing its fans to use theii Wiimotes
and DSs as contiolleis as well, because
why not: Te console itself looks to be
technically on pai with the Xbox oo
and Playstation . Moie infoimation
should be available in a few days duiing
CES io1i.
. Android updates galore. While
Apple fans await the newest veision of
the iPhone, Andioid fans will likely be
basking in a plethoia of quickly-obsolete
upgiades. Analysts expect quad-coie
tablets and phones to be ieleased in
io1i, which will be blazingly fast and
piobably have a batteiy life of seveial
minutes. Expect Ice Cieam Sandwich,
the delicious and newest veision of the
Andioid OS, to be available on most
phones and tablets this yeai.
,. Super energy-e cient OLED
TVs. While these alieady exist, expect
to see a lot of companies showing of
theii laigei, longei-lasting and cheapei
OLED TVs this yeai at CES. OLEDs,
which use oiganic compounds to emit
light, have much deepei blacks and aie
geneially biightei than LCD scieens.
At the same time, this technology is
much moie eneigy-em cient and con-
sideiably less useless than DTVs.

YOUR TWO

One of sexs eteinal questions
is when: When is the iight time
to spiead youi legs oi let someone
tiavel all the way down the goodie
tiail: When will be the exact peifect
moment-- with too soon putting you
in the hook up zone and too late being,
well, not a lot of fun. It can be a pietty
stiessful decision.
The expansive aiiay of made-up
iules that we let mandate when is the
iight time to finally go all the way
is absuid: seven dates, two months
aftei youi fiist kiss, a week aftei
you become exclusive, yadda yadda
yadda.
Look, I get it. Its easy to fall into
these haid and fast iules because they
take out the guess woik. When youie
woiking fiom a foimula, eveiything
becomes a little bit easiei. Tats tiue,
unless its foui yeais ago and youie me

But, so what if its been thiee months
and you still aient ieady to do the
deed: And what exactly do you think
will happen if instead of a seventh date
at a miniatuie golf couise, youi seventh
date is spent banging on the bathioom
fooi, Shaggy style:
What weve got to come to teims
with is theie is no one-size-fts-all way
to decode the exact iight moment to
get it on. By using the same tiied old
iules of conduct, we take the thought
out of making an impoitant decision.
And by impoitant, I dont mean its
pivotal oi piofound, necessaiily. Im
not saying that youi decision to smang
it needs to be a huge deal; it just holds
some weight. If not emotionally, then
maybe foi youi body, oi maybe foi
youi paitnei.
If weie not looking at each peison,
each ielationship, each moment in time
on its own and giving it the specifc
thought it deseives, we take away what
makes the decision peisonal. Like suie,
dess eit comes afei dinnei. But what if
its p.m. and youie passing by Andys
Custaid and all you ieally want is to
guzzle some hot fudgey goodness:
We cannot leave oui lives, sexual

Few of us iang in the New Yeai with
oui own single on iTunes, but Weinbeig
fieshman Joidan Cohen spent his bieak
pioducing oiiginal music in his basement
studio. Known by his monikei Joidan
Heniy, Cohen diopped his single Cloudy
Without a Chance on iTunes last week.
He talked to Te Cuiient
about the expeiience of
iecoiding and making
music as a typical col-
lege student.
Exceipts:
THE CURRENT: How did
you come up with
Cloudy Without a
Chance:
Jordan Cohen: I just sang it one night.
Latei, I was babysitting and saw Cloudy
With a Chance of Meatballs, and I felt
ieally stupid, and I thought, Why isnt
my song in this movie:
THE CURRENT: What infuences youi music
most:
JC: Depends on the type of music.
What I put out was inspiied a lot
by James Moiiison. He has that
kind of iaspy tonality and he
puts a lot of heait and soul into
his music.
THE CURRENT: Take me thiough the
piocess of wiiting a song.
JC: I dont spend a lot of time, actually.
Cloudy Without a Chance
only took about an houi
to wiite. I think mis-
takes aie pait of the
music, so I like only
doing one take,
and things like
that. Sometimes
when Im lying in
bed, I just think of
things, and when I
do, I sing it into
my iPhone
iecoidei and
I iemembei
it. Then I lay
it down, fiddle
aiound with
choids with the gui-
tai and piano. Ten
I stait iecoiding with
diums foi timing.
THE CURRENT: What inspiies
you to wiite:
JC: Giils aie veiy easy to wiite
about. Eveiy time something
begins oi ends theies some-
thing to wiite. Maybe because
its what we tiuly think about. In case you
couldnt tell, I dont think too much about
my music. I just kind of ihyme and go.
THE CURRENT: What made you decide to
actually iecoid something:
JC: I kind of got into iecoiding because
me and my fiiends decided to make a iap
video, which I pioduced, and I sang the
hook. One of my fiiends said, Hey, youie
kind of good at that, but I ieally didnt like
my voice. Te fist song I iecoided was foi
a giil, actually, and my fiiend put me in
fiont of a huge ciowd and thieatened me
so I would sing it.
THE CURRENT: Did that pan out foi you:
JC: It led to a yeai-long ielationship, so
yeah, it did.
THE CURRENT: Who aie youi biggest advo-
cates:
JC: My fiiends have been pietty good
about spieading the woid. Tey bought it.
I didnt tell them to oi anything, but they
bought it. My good fiiend Eiic Schoen-
bach has been ieally gieat too. He was the
one that thieatened me until I biought
my instiuments to campus. I dont know
why so much of my music staits fiom me
being thieatened.
THE CURRENT: What aie youi plans foi the
futuie:
JC: I hope to diop my album, All the
Roses, befoie the end of the yeai, maybe
by the end of summei when Ive had
some time. Im thinking it might be a
pietty eclectic album: a little acoustic,
vocal, maybe some of the iemix stuf I
do. Eveiything.

Youi New Yeais iesolution to eat
healthiei may have alieady gone bust
duiing Sundays dining hall hot cookie
bai. If it hasnt, Im impiessed with youi
self-discipline. Howevei, just because
you have one gluttonous day does not
mean the iest of the yeai is lost. You can
defnitely make healthy dining choices,
even when eating out, without saciifc-
ing taste.
In Chicago and Evanston, iestau-
iants like Union Sushi, Hota, and yes,
Edzos Buigei Shop, can help you ease
the guilt of that cookie binge.
If youie out foi sushi at Union
Sushi + Baibecue Bai (io W Eiie St.,
Chicago), tiy black instead of white
iice in youi maki ioll. Teies a dollai
upchaige pei ioll, but its totally woith
it. Black iice doesnt quite have the nutty
taste of biown iice, but its fimei than
white iice. At Union, Chef Chao cooks
his black iice with a little vinegai to
enhance the favoi. With fewei caloiies
and caibohydiates and moie piotein,
fbei and antioxidants, black iice wins
easily in nutiition. In my none-too-
scientifc taste test, black iice tasted
bettei too. Heie, favoi and health go
hand-in-hand. Evanston sushi joints
like Koi, Kansaku and Sashimi Sashimi
dont ofei black iice yet, so youll have
to head to Union in Rivei Noith.
Newly-opened Hota (i,, Piaiiie
Ave., Evanston), which used to be Jackys
on Piaiiie, ofeis healthy gouimet din-
ing at a college piice point. Te piiciest
lunch entiee is steak with aiugula at
1o. Ive got my eye on the baiiamundi
with a cuied lemon-tahini sauce and
couscous-chickpea salad (1). Sand-
wiches, including the Mediteiianeo
(11) with oystei mushiooms, smoked
squash, fiesh mozzaiella and paisley-
oiegano salsa, aie seived on eithei a
Bennisons baguette oi souidough that
Chef Jonadab Silva makes himself. Silva
says he caiefully consideis the nutii-
tional content of all his dishes, tiying to
ciaf a well-iounded meal full of favoi.
Youll eat well at Hota, but not at the
expense of youi waistline oi wallet.
You can even fnd healthful items
in the least likely of places. Take my
peiennial favoiite, Edzos Buigei Shop
(1,,1 Sheiman Ave., Evanston). Suie,
I geneially get an eight ounce chai-
buigei, tium e fiies and a milkshake,
but did you know that Edzos seives up
a ieally tasty poitobello buigei (.,)
too: Skip the bland Moiningstai veg-
gie patty foi maiinated poitobello cap
topped with ioasted peppeis, onions
and a little heib mayo. You can even
ask Eddie to hold the mayo if you
must. Gianted, going to Edzos with
the objective of eating a healthy low-
caloiie meal is a little like handing youi
AmEx black caid to a shopaholic with
instiuctions to window shop. So not
happening. Im not suggesting you go
in with the goal of eating healthy, but
foi those with moie will powei than
me, it is possible.

Ah, shopping. Coming out of the
holiday season, its not something most
people want to think about, let alone do.
But as the hoiioi of fiantic baigain hunt-
eis and inhumane ciowds weais of, most
of us will ventuie back out into the ietail
woild all too soon. Now that its Januaiy,
weie seeing biight, new iesoit oi pie-
spiing collections on the foois of oui
favoiite stoies. So just as youie getting
settled into youi knee-length-oi-longei
paika, the saitoiial gods begin taunting
you with waim weathei biights and youie
obviously going to want to shop. Im not
heie to discouiage some ietail theiapy
when wintei blues and too many layeis
(and not the good kind) get you down.
Im heie to help.
Too often, by the time its waim
enough to weai the peifect spiing piece
you bought in the dead of wintei, its been
shoved into the waidiobe com n, tags and
all. Well, I have the peifect solution foi
youi puichasing woes and its moie useful
than youi ciedit caid on any shopping tiip
you make: its the two outft iule.
Next time you fnd youiself in the
fuoiescence of a stoie with puichase
potential, stop befoie you pick up that
cute item you just have to have, and think.
Pictuie that item, whatevei it may be, with
two difeient combinations of clothes you
alieady have in youi closet. Tis insuies
that you will have something to weai it
with (without spending any extia money).
If you buy it, you wont get boied because
you have moie than one way to weai it.
Dangeis abound when you buy an item
with an outft of othei items you have yet
to buy in mindwhat if those othei items
dont exist: Imagining a potential buy
with clothes you alieady own will give
you ways to iemix youi waidiobe and will
save you fiom spending money only to
send youi not de-tagged item of clothing
to the closet moigue.
As an additional tip, be cieative with
youi two outft imagination. If Im buy-
ing a top, I ofen tiy to think of a day
outft and a night outft to maximize
the occasions foi the shiit. You can also
imagine a seasonal tiansition, which will
be helpful when buying spiing clothes
in Januaiy. How can you weai youi new
buy befoie its as waim as the happy
people playing in the catalogs weaiing
whatevei you just bought: If you take
this into account, , youll get moie weai
out of something youie loving iight now
foi the piice.
As someone who can nevei pack a
suitcase undei the ,o pound limit, Ive
found that when you employ the two out-
ft iule, youll nevei look with disdain at
youi waidiobe and whine about having
nothing to weai. You also wont staie long-
ingly at a new item of clothing, willing the
lifeless gaiment to automatically inspiie
the iest of an impeccable ensemble.
io1i piomises to be a landmaik yeai
in consumei electionics. As last yeais
(oi last months) geneiation of devices
become obsolete, heie aie a few updates
to watch out foi:
1. e iPhone . Following Apples
established updated pattein of new
iPhone, modified veision of that
iPhone, and then newei iPhone, weie
piobably going to see the iPhone , and
its piobably going to be on shelves this
autumn oi next wintei. Safe bets foi
new featuies include G data and NFC,
which will allow you to foiego ciedit
caids and use youi phone to make
tiansactions, ieally simplifying things
foi muggeis.
i. e iPad . Te iPad i came out
in Maich io11, so its extiemely likely
that well see Apples new iPad in a few
months. Apples modus opeiandi with
these annual updates seems to be focus-
ing on giadual impiovements iathei
than ievolutionaiy changes, so the iPad
will piesumably featuie an impiovement
in piocessoi powei and stoiage capac-
ity. Te iPad i will likely be made much
cheapei to compete moie diiectly with
competitois such as the Kindle Fiie.
. Wii U. Nintendos stiange, soita-
tablet-based next geneiation console is
expected to be ieleased in the second
half of io1i. Its most exciting new fea-
tuie is its contiollei, which has a o.i
inch touch scieen on a motion-sensing,
tablet-like body. Only one of these con-
tiolleis can be used at a time on the Wii
U and appaiently whatevei game youie
playing can be stieamed stiaight to the
contiolleis scieen, allowing useis to
view additional infoimation about the
game theyie playing. Nintendo plans on
allowing its fans to use theii Wiimotes
and DSs as contiolleis as well, because
why not: Te console itself looks to be
technically on pai with the Xbox oo
and Playstation . Moie infoimation
should be available in a few days duiing
CES io1i.
. Android updates galore. While
Apple fans await the newest veision of
the iPhone, Andioid fans will likely be
basking in a plethoia of quickly-obsolete
upgiades. Analysts expect quad-coie
tablets and phones to be ieleased in
io1i, which will be blazingly fast and
piobably have a batteiy life of seveial
minutes. Expect Ice Cieam Sandwich,
the delicious and newest veision of the
Andioid OS, to be available on most
phones and tablets this yeai.
,. Super energy-e cient OLED
TVs. While these alieady exist, expect
to see a lot of companies showing of
theii laigei, longei-lasting and cheapei
OLED TVs this yeai at CES. OLEDs,
which use oiganic compounds to emit
light, have much deepei blacks and aie
geneially biightei than LCD scieens.
At the same time, this technology is
much moie eneigy-em cient and con-
sideiably less useless than DTVs.

One of sexs eteinal questions
is when: When is the iight time
to spiead youi legs oi let someone
tiavel all the way down the goodie
tiail: When will be the exact peifect
moment-- with too soon putting you
in the hook up zone and too late being,
well, not a lot of fun. It can be a pietty
stiessful decision.
The expansive aiiay of made-up
iules that we let mandate when is the
iight time to finally go all the way
is absuid: seven dates, two months
aftei youi fiist kiss, a week aftei
you become exclusive, yadda yadda
yadda.
Look, I get it. Its easy to fall into
these haid and fast iules because they
take out the guess woik. When youie
woiking fiom a foimula, eveiything
becomes a little bit easiei. Tats tiue,
unless its foui yeais ago and youie me

But, so what if its been thiee months
and you still aient ieady to do the
deed: And what exactly do you think
will happen if instead of a seventh date
at a miniatuie golf couise, youi seventh
date is spent banging on the bathioom
fooi, Shaggy style:
What weve got to come to teims
with is theie is no one-size-fts-all way
to decode the exact iight moment to
get it on. By using the same tiied old
iules of conduct, we take the thought
out of making an impoitant decision.
And by impoitant, I dont mean its
pivotal oi piofound, necessaiily. Im
not saying that youi decision to smang
it needs to be a huge deal; it just holds
some weight. If not emotionally, then
maybe foi youi body, oi maybe foi
youi paitnei.
If weie not looking at each peison,
each ielationship, each moment in time
on its own and giving it the specifc
thought it deseives, we take away what
makes the decision peisonal. Like suie,
dess eit comes afei dinnei. But what if
its p.m. and youie passing by Andys
Custaid and all you ieally want is to
guzzle some hot fudgey goodness:
We cannot leave oui lives, sexual
oi otheiwise, to aibitiaiy, impeisonal
iules that pigeon-hole us into mak-
ing decisions that might not actually
be iight foi us. We have to look into
ouiselves to know whethei we should
take the plunge, whethei its time to get
down oi time to go home.
So, when the time feels iight, get
laid, Wildcats.

Few of us iang in the New Yeai with
oui own single on iTunes, but Weinbeig
fieshman Joidan Cohen spent his bieak
pioducing oiiginal music in his basement
studio. Known by his monikei Joidan
Heniy, Cohen diopped his single Cloudy
Without a Chance on iTunes last week.
He talked to Te Cuiient
about the expeiience of
iecoiding and making
music as a typical col-
lege student.
Exceipts:
THE CURRENT: How did
you come up with
Cloudy Without a
Chance:
Jordan Cohen: I just sang it one night.
Latei, I was babysitting and saw Cloudy
With a Chance of Meatballs, and I felt
ieally stupid, and I thought, Why isnt
my song in this movie:
THE CURRENT: What infuences youi music
most:
JC: Depends on the type of music.
What I put out was inspiied a lot
by James Moiiison. He has that
kind of iaspy tonality and he
puts a lot of heait and soul into
his music.
THE CURRENT: Take me thiough the
piocess of wiiting a song.
JC: I dont spend a lot of time, actually.
Cloudy Without a Chance
only took about an houi
to wiite. I think mis-
takes aie pait of the
music, so I like only
doing one take,
and things like
that. Sometimes
when Im lying in
bed, I just think of
things, and when I
do, I sing it into
my iPhone
iecoidei and
I iemembei
it. Then I lay
it down, fiddle
aiound with
choids with the gui-
tai and piano. Ten
I stait iecoiding with
diums foi timing.
THE CURRENT: What inspiies
you to wiite:
JC: Giils aie veiy easy to wiite
about. Eveiy time something
begins oi ends theies some-
thing to wiite. Maybe because
its what we tiuly think about. In case you
couldnt tell, I dont think too much about
my music. I just kind of ihyme and go.
THE CURRENT: What made you decide to
actually iecoid something:
JC: I kind of got into iecoiding because
me and my fiiends decided to make a iap
video, which I pioduced, and I sang the
hook. One of my fiiends said, Hey, youie
kind of good at that, but I ieally didnt like
my voice. Te fist song I iecoided was foi
a giil, actually, and my fiiend put me in
fiont of a huge ciowd and thieatened me
so I would sing it.
THE CURRENT: Did that pan out foi you:
JC: It led to a yeai-long ielationship, so
yeah, it did.
THE CURRENT: Who aie youi biggest advo-
cates:
JC: My fiiends have been pietty good
about spieading the woid. Tey bought it.
I didnt tell them to oi anything, but they
bought it. My good fiiend Eiic Schoen-
bach has been ieally gieat too. He was the
one that thieatened me until I biought
my instiuments to campus. I dont know
why so much of my music staits fiom me
being thieatened.
THE CURRENT: What aie youi plans foi the
futuie:
JC: I hope to diop my album, All the
Roses, befoie the end of the yeai, maybe
by the end of summei when Ive had
some time. Im thinking it might be a
pietty eclectic album: a little acoustic,
vocal, maybe some of the iemix stuf I
do. Eveiything.

Fuck You, I Love You, Bye: e Rahm
Emanuel Story, directed by Paul Turner,
and written by Marc Warzecha and Andy
Cobb, isnt really the Rahm Emanuel
story at all. Yes, this play gives the audi-
ence a survey of some important events
in Emanuels life, but really, this play is
about some guy named Rahm who loves
to say the word fuck (and also has a little
something to do with politics).
e play, which is currently playing at
e Annoyance eater & Bar in Chicago,
is set in the year in the Museum of
Science and Industry where a docent,
Vallea Woodbury, a Northwestern alum,
takes three visitors on a tour of Rahm
Emanuels life and career. With the help
of a holographic Rahm, (Tim McKend-
rick) the docent takes the tourists and the
audience through a series of ashbacks
that try and put a comedic spin on the
major events of Emanuels life.
e real Rahm Emanuel, a former
U.S. congressman, White House Chief of
Sta and ballet prodigy, already has a ne
list of accomplishments. e ashbacks
portray his life through comedy in ways
that range from the expected, such as the
Sopranos mob-style political shakedown
to become mayor of Chicago, to the wacky,
as the brothers Emanuel compete for their
mothers aection through a combination
game show-Shabbat dinner. Rahm himself
is presented as a loud, aggressive man who
has become so used to cursing and scream-
ing that he no longer understands how real
humans interact. e show presents this
as Rahms chief conict-- he is on the one
hand a ruthless political operator who
smells of blood and wolf semen while
on the other hand he is a loving father and
accomplished politician. e whole blood
and semen dichotomy didnt really make
much sense in the theater, either.
I do feel a bit silly criticizing this show
for being inane, ridiculous, or crass,
though it was all three of those things and
then some. is was not, by any stretch of
the imagination, a good play. It
lacked everything from struc-
ture, to character develop-
ment, to acting. ere was
none of the urgency or
cutting humor that
is typically present
in effective and
clever satire. The
show had nothing
to say about Rahm,
about Chicago, about
politics, about anything.
But to be honest, it was still a pretty funny
show and I found myself laughing out
loud a lot. e entire show is built upon
the premise that its humorous to see
people say fuck to each other. ats
not a particularly sophisticated brand of
comedy, but its pretty fucking funny.

House of Lies (Showtime) is a half-
hour comedy series about a successful
consultant at a highly-ranked manage-
ment consulting rm who will do any-
thing in his power in order to stay on
top of the pack. e pilot was reviewed
quite well by critics, but regardless, you
should watch for Don Cheadles cha-
risma as Marty, the cutthroat lead con-
sultant, and Kristen Bells sassy charm
as the Ivy League grad working at the
rm. e series airs on Sundays start-
ing Jan. .
Are You ere, Chelsea? (NBC)
is a half-hour comedy about the ups,
downs, blunders and disasters of Chelsea
Handlers roller coaster life. In a twist of
events, the show features Chelsea Handler
playing the role of Sloane, Chelseas sister,
and Laura Prepon (at s Show) as
the incorrigible and hysterical Chelsea.
e series will be loosely based on Han-
dlers best-selling book, Are You ere,
Vodka? Its Me Chelsea, although we can
all imagine that not all of the X-rated
tidbits can be translated onto the small
screen. Are You ere, Chelsea? airs on
Wednesdays starting Jan. .
Alcatraz (FOX) combines the all-too-
provocative formula of J.J. Abrams and an
island of mystery and intriguealbeit a
completely dierent, arguably more dan-
gerous island. e show follows a trio of
investigators, played by Rebecca Mad-
sen, Sam Neill and Jorge Garcia, as they
struggle to discover why of Alcatrazs
most dangerous prisoners reappeared on
the island years aer they vanished. If
you felt yourself getting goose bumps at
the words J.J. Abrams, Jorge Garcia,
island, or vanished, then this is prob-
ably the show for you. You can see it on
Mondays starting Jan. .
Smash (NBC) centers around the
life of struggling actors and singers try-
ing to break into the Broadway indus-
try. e show goes backstage, focusing
on creation of a musical about Marilyn
Monroe and how the cast, producers, and
directors must work together and oen
make sacrices in order to achieve suc-
cess. Although the show is about a musical
and obviously contains singing, it is noth-
ing like Glee (if that was your hesitation
in watching). e show stars Katherine
McPhee, of American Idol fame, Debra
Messing, Jack Davenport, and Oscar win-
ner Angelica Houston. Smash airs on
Mondays starting Feb. .
Awake (NBC) focuses on a police
detective who loses a family member in
a devastating car crash, but this accident
throws him into two parallel univers-
esin one, his wife has survived, while
in the other, his only son is the survivor.
In addition to dealing with the trauma
of not knowing which family member
is alive at a given time, he continues to
solve crimes while taking advantage of
his ability to be in two parallel universes.
e show stars the fabulous Jason Isaacs
(Lucius Malfoy, anyone?) and is pur-
ported to be one of the most confusing
but also most impressive pilots of the
coming season. e shows premiere date
has not been announced, but it will be
this winter.

Film acionados and casual movie-
goers alike will be pleasantly surprised to
hear that there is much to look forward to
in the coming months and plenty of hope
for the box o ce.
e Hunger Games hits theaters in
March. Adapted from the dystopian novels
by Suzanne Collins, the lm (and franchise)
is sure to delight both young adults and
those adults who act like theyre young.
Soon aer, Ridley Scott (director of
Blade Runner and Alien) is back in the
sci- arena with Prometheus, a kind-of-
sort-of Alien prequel that is being kept
rmly under wraps.
Pixars Brave has the potential to redeem
the embarrassing mess that was Cars and
it will feature the innovative studios rst
female heroine.
Having lost his Joker, Christopher Nolan
will be hard put to top the furor created by
e Dark Knight. But by adding a slinky
Catwoman (Anne Hathaway) and a muscle-
bound super villain, Bane (Tom Hardy), e
Dark Knight Rises is going to give it a shot.
Skyfall, the latest in the Bond series, is
due to premiere in late autumn. e plot,
a rescue caper centered around Bonds
harsh-yet-lovable boss, M (Judi Dench),
has the potential to be as emotionally grip-
ping as the romance in Casino Royale.
With that we come to December, the
permanent residence of Oscar bait.
The new adaptation of The Great
Gatsby looks promising both because Baz
Luhrman (Moulin Rouge) is at the helm and
because he recruited a stellar cast, includ-
ing Leonardo DiCaprio as the quintessen-
tial playboy of the s and Carey Mulligan
as his nave, married sweetheart.
Hugh Jackman is surely practicing his
falsetto for the upcoming version of Les
Misrables. Many of the actors can sing and
Tom Hoopers Oscar for e Kings Speech
supposedly means he can direct.
e Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
will return us to Middle-Earth, with all
the Peter Jackson-brand magic e Lord
of the Rings taught us to expect. Hardcore
fans have been grumbling about the return
of characters, such as Frodo, that have no
place in Tolkiens book. Still, this is Hol-
lywood, and nixing the recognizable stars
would be box o ce suicide.
Finally, Stephen Spielberg will present
Lincoln, which (surprise, surprise) is about
Abraham Lincoln saving the Union. While
Daniel Day-Lewiss portrayal of the th
president is sure to stun, to be honest, I am
more excited to see this summers weirdest
thriller, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Slayer.

Looking for a fresh and undiscovered
sound? is London-based band of ve
stylish British men is still so new that a
full-length album has yet to be released,
but BBC has already nominated them for
BBCs Sound of due to their love-at-
rst-listen appeal.
Spector started as a one-man project by
-year-old Fred Macpherson. Now, the
band has grown and circulated with the
release of their rst single last April. While
they have only released three singles so far,
they have been on the rise . e Guardian
introduced them as the new band of the
day last May and they were covered in
New Musical Express rst issue of .
Even Alex James, bass player of fellow
London-based band Blur, has recently
recommended Spector as the band to
listen to for the new year.
Spector has a dierent sound than other
indie rock bands in many ways, but their
music includes many elements that are
similar to some of the great musical groups
of the past few decades. Spector has put
a spin on the popular rock sound of e
Strokes, e Killers and e Walkmen.
Spectors rst single, Never Fade
Away, starts o with a catchy and repeti-
tive chorus. Its jazzy groove is eortlessly
ear-catching. A mix of consistent synth
and rather simple beats continue to add
personal style to the track. Toward the end
of the song, the tempo speeds up, the beat
gets more elaborate, and Macphersons
vocals crescendo until all instrumentals
slowly fade out and return to the refrain
from the songs beginning.
e second single, What You Wanted,
is a relatively upbeat, Two-Door-Cinema-
Club-style track. Macphersons relaxed,
laid-back and almost nonchalant vocal
style resembles Julian Casablancas of e
Strokes. His distinctive vocals stand out
especially in the S.C.U.M remix of the
track the band oers as one of its free
downloads.
Dierent from two of their previous
tracks, Grey Tie and Shirt is a much
slower and groovier track that has a Glas-
vegas vibe. Its sound is rich, paired with
a simple rhythm and melody making it a
catchy, stuck-in-your-head tune.
Before their upcoming fourth single,
Chevy under, was on the radio for
the rst time on January , BBC Radio
One described them as an alternative boy
band on Twitter. But trust me, Spector
is incomparable to Backstreet Boys or
N Sync. Although they are a relatively
new indie band, they dont perform in the
expected casual t-shirts and jeans. Instead,
they are always dressed in classic British
style, donning slim-t dress shirts and
blazers. Aside from their style, Macpher-
son is dynamic and energetic as he com-
mands the stage. He has a very personal
and eccentric stage persona.
Currently working on their debut
album, scheduled to be released this
year, Spector will headline a UK tour
in February, open for Florence + e
Machines tour in March and perform
at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts
Festival this April.

First day of classes
Whether we like or not, breaks over and
winter quarter o cially began last week. Our
hearts go out to the freshmen from warm parts
of the world who were probably shocked to nd
snow welcoming them at the airport and the
international students still ghting the jet lag.
Purple pride
Wildcat fans cheered on their team at three
basketball games last week. Mens basketball
lost by one point to Illinois on Wednesday and
Womens basketball lost to Iowa by points on
ursday, but won their game against Indiana
by points on Sunday. Go C ats!
Summerfest
True to the stereotype that Northwestern stu-
dents are perpetual over-achievers, some of us
are already planning for summer. Last ursday,
University Career Services hosted Summerfest in
Norris, providing information on everything from
summer internships to cover letter reviews.
