Legend

A fantasy film made in 1985 by Ridley Scott starring Tom cruise, as Jack o Green, Mia Sara as Princess Lily, Tim curry as Darkness and David Bennent as Honeythorn Gump . It wasn t very successful during its first screening, but won the nomination for best make up and has since gathered a small cult of followers.

Legend is a film based upon the art that was designed for it- making most of the shots look like actual installation art. This is because before Ridley Scott directed films, he directed commercials, something that is supposed to be artistic and centring the product being sold.

A scene from legend, notice how the scene looks rather like a real paining.

The art of the film drives its story, creating a fantasy world in which the characters live and act. The style of Legend makes most of the shots look on purpose, making them look like living concept art, but also fake as well.

The Female role is rather prominent in Legend, giving the last living Unicorn a female gender, though, one of the characters discriminates women, he is soon corrected; She is just a female, she has no power -goblin Only the power of creation! -dark lord Giving women a lot of power, considering the early day of cinematography where women were considered powerless, weak and less than men.

The make-up for the film was rather extraordinary too. The actors had to spend hours in the morning, sitting while up to three make-up artists each applied prosthetics layer by layer to ensure the prosthetics moved with the muscles of the actors. The worst being Tim Curry, having full body make-up and heavy fiberglass horns which put a strain on his neck. Curry was so claustrophobic in his make-up that he once pulled it off, ripping some of his skin off in the process.

Tim Curry in full Darkness costume, here you can see the extent of his make-up, horns, teeth, chin- everything is covered in red latex.

The Story-line for Legend seemed stolen from various other fantasy stories such as peterpan, as in the beginning, the characters, Jack and Lilly seemed rather innocent and childlike; Are you afraid to kiss me? - Lilly I am afraid you ll break my heart - Jack This conversation is rather like a first love conversation , Jack being rather scared of rejection and so denies himself the love of the princess, maybe feeling like he isn t ready.
