Context
This program addresses the key learning area of Science, and has been developed in order to meet Stage 2 Outcomes in accordance with the NSW Science and Technology Syllabus. This program aims to assist students by embedding an inquiry-based learning model based upon the five phases of: Engage Explore Explain Elaborate Evaluate This program addresses the opportunity to link science with literacy in the classroom. While exploring how solids or liquids are influence by temperature, students experience the way items from their everyday life change. Through hands-on investigations, students investigate how the size of the pieces affects the melting time of chocolate.
Outcomes
To be confirmed and updated as NSW Outcomes are aligned with the National Outcomes that are expressed in Primary Connections resources.
EXPLORE EXPLORE
EXPLORE EXPLAIN
To support students to represent and explain their understanding of the way different materials change from solid to liquid at different temperatures, and to introduce current scientific views. To support students to plan and conduct an ELABORATE 6 Break it up investigation of the way shape affects the p.41 melting rate of chocolate. To provide opportunities for students to EVALUATE 7 Ready to set represent what they know about the way a p.49 change of state between solid and liquid can be caused by adding or removing heat, and to reflect on their learning during the unit.
2 Heat it up p.18 3 Cool customers p. 26 4 Freeze it! p.31 5 Sometimes solid p.35
Enrichment
o Students take home information note for families where they can observe and record information related to the observation of items melting in the home. o Resource Sheet 1&2 in Primary Connections unit

Assessment
Diagnostic assessment: Occurs in the Engage phase. This assessment is to elicit students prior knowledge so that the teacher can take account of this when planning how the Explore and Explain lessons will be implemented. Formative assessment: Occurs in the Explore and Explain phases. This enables the teacher to monitor students developing understanding and providing feedback that can extend and deepen students learning. Summative assessment: Of the students achievement developed throughout the unit occurs in the Elaborate phase of the Science Inquiry Skills and of the Science Understanding in the Evaluate phase. Rubrics to help teacher judgements are available at: www.science.org.au/primaryconnections/curriculum-resources/
