A police aircraft is an airplane,helicopter, powered paraglider,or blimp used in policeoperations. They arecommonly used for trafficcontrol, ground support,search and rescue, high-speed car pursuits,observation, air patrol and riotcontrol.In major cities in the UnitedStates, police helicopters arealso used as air transportationfor SWAT personnel.
FIRST IN FLIGHT
The first police aviationdepartment was established in1919 in New York City withtwo airplanes. Fixed wingaircraft have generally beenreplaced by the more versatilehelicopter since the late1940s.However, airplanes still havetheir uses in some missions,such as border patrol, as their

higher speed and greater operating altitudeallows larger areas to be covered.
FULLY LOADED
Police helicopters are normally equippedwith variants such as:night vision,FLIR,infrared,surveillancecameras,radar, specialradio systems,engines,loudspeaker systems,tear gas dispensers,searchlights,winches and winch cables,flashing light beacons,police rescue equipment,special seating.Weapons are usually not attached to theaircraft.
