Hello classmates!

Here's my attempt at question 1 for assignment 1.

I used Winston's ideas of “supervening social necessities” and “law of the suppression of radical potential" to substantiate my example of hybrid cars technology in my essay.

As for the multimodal aspect, I chose to do it as a brochure.

In Winston’s article, he brought in the concept of “supervening socialnecessities”, which are theaccelerators pushing thedevelopment of media and other technology. In this essay, I willattempt to talk about howenvironmental sustainability is asupervening social necessity in today’s context. With increased natural disasterslike tsunamis, we are actuallyexperiencing the negativeenvironmental impacts that we havebrought upon ourselves because ofextensive industrialization andcommercialization over the pastfew decades. On top of this, moreawareness about our environmentis being promoted via socialmedia. For example, there is a trending topic about how peopleare going green on Twitter andhow more bloggers are talking theimportance of saving ourenvironment and the ways to goabout doing so. People are nowmore conscious of what we aredoing to the environment and therepercussions of our selfishactions might bring. Many of us

are trying to save the earth asmuch as we can now and one of the ways that we turn to is bycutting energy using technology.Another reason would be to cutdown on the large amounts ofmoney spent on energyconsumption by companies. Theneed for more efficient energymanagement is definitelymotivating the invention many new technologies today. Companies arespending much money on technologies that allow them touse energy more efficiently and
hence increase their turnoverprofits.Having said these, it is obvious that the desire for increasedenvironmental sustainability is an
accelerator for new technologiesin contemporary context. Now, letus look at one of the technology –hybrid cars.We see that the demand forenvironmental sustainability inwork with the invention of hybrid vehicles with low gas emissions soas to reduce greenhouse gaseslike carbon dioxide in the air. The

greater the MPG, the lower theamount of CO2 produced when traveling a fixed number of miles.Hybrids also reduce air pollution byemitting much lower rates of smog-producing gases. The first hybridcar that was invented in 1989. Itwas the Audi Duo experimental vehicle, based on the Audi 100Avant Quattro whose nickel-cadmium battery supplied theenergy.Since then, many car companieslike Honda and Toyota have beenkeeping up in order to remaincompetitive in the market. Forexample, Honda released the two-door Insight, the first hybrid car tohit the mass market in the UnitedStates in 1999 and Toyota released the Toyota Prius, the first hybridfour-door sedan available in theUnited States in 2000. Gradually,Lexus is aiming for zero gasemissions today by using othersources of power like radio waves, electromagnetic fields, hydrogenand liquid nitrogen.Moving on, let us talk about theconcept of “law” of the suppression
