Goals of the Study

Ayuda community center is an established part of the East Hunting park community andthe staff and board have extensive knowledge of the community. They do recognize the potential problems with becoming complacent about what they may see, and also theyhave a desire to delve deeper into the demographics of the area.With that in mind Ayuda Community Center requested that Common Grace conduct acommunity analysis for the area looking for things that the Center may have overlooked,and also gathering data to help the board and staff of Ayuda to evaluate current programsand inform future decisions.

Defining the Community

The community boundaries were defined for us by Ayuda as being 5

street to the East,Hunting Park avenue to the South, 9

street to the West and Roosevelt Boulevard (USRoute 1) to the North.For the scope of our study we went outside these boundaries in the following cases:1.we included some study of Hunting Park, which lies west of 9

street as it is amajor component of the area.2.we conducted some analysis of the area using a 0.25 mile radius from the Ayudacommunity center that includes a small section North East of the original boundaries. This area is very small and as such does not alter our data in anysignificant way.3.we conducted analysis of surrounding communities for comparison to the definedcommunity.4.we conducted analysis of areas that included the defined community but wentfurther, including the entire zip code, increasing radius, city wide and nationaldata. This was all done for comparison to the defined community.

Study procedure

We used a number of formal and informal procedures to conduct the study including thefollowing:1.statistical data gathered from the United States census2.statistical data gathered and complied by the demographics department of Newton, Oldacre, McDonald. This is a highly reputable commercial developmentcompany and is a known leader nationally in understanding commercialdemographics.3.informal conversations with community residents.4.community “drive throughs” where every street was driven at least twice, atvarying times, and by more than one person.5.walking through the community at various times of the day and engaging indiscussion with residents6.discussions with those outside the community on their impressions of thecommunity.
