Defining the terms

What are we talking about

Backup
A collection of data stored on (usually removable) non-volatile storage media for purposes of recovery in case the original copy of data is lost or becomes inaccessible; also called a backup copy.

Archive
A collection of data objects, perhaps with associated metadata, in a storage system whose primary purpose is the long-term preservation and retention of that data.

The Data Protection Challenge Is More Than Just Capacity

Data Protection Strategies must Align with the Cost of Outages and Expected Growth

Data protection SLAs are becoming more stringent

The cost of outages is increasing High-availability is becoming more common

Data in databases is growing at over 40% per year

Restore Performance is becoming more critical

The need to archive is growing

68% of companies need 100-year archives

Storage management costs more

Left unchecked, they could reach 30% of total IT spend

Storage consumes ~40% of data center power

Growing at 20% CAGR
IDC Digital Universe Study, sponsored by EMC, May 2010; 68% of companies need 100 year archives - SNIA 100 Year Archive Survey, Power consumption and growth - 2007 Jupiter Media Corporation and The StorageIO Group, Report to Congress on Server and Data Energy Efficiency
