Optometrists
Optometristsobtaintheirdoctorate
of optometry
uponcompletion
of
a
4-year
graduateeducation
in
optometry.Optometricstudentsgen-
erally
spendthefirst
two
yearsinlearning basicsciencesand
the
last
twoyears
in learning
to
refractpatientsfor correctiveeyewear
(glasses
and
contact
lens)
and examineocular diseases.Upongraduation
and
passing
the
licensing
board
examinations,
optometristscan
practiceoptometry.
Clinicalresidency
oppoftunities
areavailable
tooptometrists
who
wish
to
obtain
advancedclinical
competence
in anarea'Thesespecialty
areas
includefamilypracticeoptometry,pediatricoptometry'geriatricoptometry,visiontherapy
and
rehabilitation,low-visionreha-bilitation,cornea andcontact
lenses,refractiveand
ocularsurgery,
and
primary
eye
care optometryand ocular
disease.

must

by 3yearsoftraining
in
ophthalmology'
Upon
completionofthe
internshipyear
and
passing
the
nationalmedical
board
examina-tions,thesephysicians
are
fully-licensed
to
practicegeneralmedicine.During
the
3
yearsofresidency
in
ophthalmology,
the
residentphysi-
cians
learn
the
eye'sanatomy,thetreatment
of
eyediseases,
andtheskillsnecessary
to
performsurgeriesof ditferentsubspecialties
of
ophthalmology.There
are
about
nine or
ten
subspecialties:
pediatric'
cornea,refractive,glaucoma,neuro-ophthalmology,ocular
oncology'ocularpathology,ocularplastics,
uveitis,
andvitreo-retinal
surgery.Upon
completingthe
residency,
these
physicians
canpracticeoph-thalmologyandbecomeboard-certified
by
passingthewritten
andoralspecialtyboardexaminations.
As
the trendofhealthcaredelivery
has becomemore specialized,about
3O-4O%
of
ophthalmologists
choose
to
spend
an
additional
one
tothreeyears
in
fellowshiptraining
in
oneof
the
subspecialties
areas.
