"Cloudcomputingisamodelforenablingubiquitous,convenient,on-demandnetworkaccesstoasharedpoolofconfigurablecomputingresources(i.e.networks,servers,storage,applications,andservices)thatcanberapidlyprovisionedandreleasedwithminimalmanagementeffortorserviceproviderinteraction."MellandGrancecontinuebyspecifyingfive"essentialcharacteristics"ofcloudcomputing,whichwewillparaphrasebelow:
On-demandself-service:
Theconsumerofthecloudcomputingenvironmentcandeployandmanageapplicationsandrequestresourceswithoutneedingdirectinterventionoftheoperatorofthecloudinfrastructure.
Broadnetworkaccess:
Thecloudcapabilitiesareaccessedremotelyoverthenetworkusingstandardmechanisms.
Resourcepooling:
Resourcesinthecloudarepartofacommonpoolsharedbyconsumerswhichmaybeindifferentorganizations.Resourcesareallocatedforprivateusebyanorganizationon-demand,andreturnedtothecommonpoolwhentheorganizationisdonewiththem.
Rapidelasticity:
Resourcescanberequestedandapplicationscanbedeployedquickly,evenautomatically,andtheycanbedestroyedequallyquickly.Theavailableresourcesinthecloudmayseemeffectivelyinfinitetoeachconsumer.
Measuredservice:
Thecloudautomaticallymonitorsandmeasuresresourcesinuse.Resourceusagecanbereportedasappropriatefortheresource,sothatboththeconsumerandproviderofthecloudinfrastructurehaveinsightintoitsoperations,andresourceusecanbeaccountedfor(andpossiblybilledtoeachconsumer/organization)appropriately.Inotherwords,thecloudinfrastructureconsistsofacollectionofsystemsthatcanbeaccessedoverthenetwork.Thesesystemscaneasilyhaveapplicationsdeployedtothem,on-demand,andthoseapplicationinstancescanalsobeeasilyshutdownanddisposedofwhennolongerneeded.Thecloudinfrastructureitselfcanbeprovidedbyaseparateserviceproviderthantheorganizationthatmanagestheapplications.The

Cloudconsumersincludenotonlytheendusersofcloudapplications,butalsoprogrammersandsystemarchitectswhichdesignsolutionsusingcloudserviceproviders.

CloudprovidersaretheorganizationsresponsibleforimplementingservicesusedbyCloudConsumers.
