Running head: EAP PROPOSAL FOR XYZ COMPANYEmployee Assistance Program Proposal for XYZ Co.John Joshua PazRaphael P. MalenabRimel D. EvaristoDe La Salle University Manila1
Chapter I: Introduction
Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) help identify, refer, and treat workers whose personal problems affect their performance (Hodhes, 1995). While some large companies still provide an in-house EAP, most outsource their EAPs. Initially started in the 1940s to combatalcoholism, these programs have expanded to deal with emotional, family, marital, and financial problems, and, more recently, drug abuse. Alcohol and drug use costs billions per year in lost productivity, accidents and turnover. Other factors, too, have contributed to increased problems:altered family structures, the growth of single-parent households, the increase in divorce, greater mobility, and changing models of child rearing are all fairly recent phenomena that have addedto the stress experienced by employees. These trends indicate that an increasing number of employees need assistance with personal problems, and research suggests that EAP use increasesduring downtime and restructuring (Lissy and Morgenstern (1995).As such, this paper includes a study as well as a proposal that intends to give anEmployee Assistance Program intervention to Company XYZ, an Information Technologycompany based in Manila, Philippines and belongs to the top 2000 corporations in the country. Itis a Private Corporation founded and registered under the Securities and Exchanges Commissionin May 1996 and has been in operation for 15 years. Two research instruments were used in data gathering. The quantitative instrument was athree part, 49-item scale used to measure basic employee awareness about EAPs, employeeclimate and employee perception and attitude towards counseling and EAPs. Basic awarenesswas measured using four (4) standard questions. On the other hand, employee climate wasmeasured using a 30-item, 5 point Likert scale questionnaire. Response choices ranged from“best describes you” (referring to the statement) to “Not you at all”. Lastly, employee attitudes
EAP PROPOSAL FOR XYZ COMPANY 3towards counseling was measured in a 15-item, 5 point Likert scale with response choicesranging from “Strongly Agree” to “Strongly Disagree”The qualitative research instrument on the other hand, used a structured interviewquestionnaire in due consideration of the time element both for the researchers and therespondents in the Company. The interview guide was composed of 10 general questions and 7sub-questions. This being a structured interview, the researcher refrained rom interjectingadditional questions during the interview unless otherwise necessary in keeping the discussionshort and straight to the point.Given the findings in the study, the researchers plan to use welfare and internal basedmodels and recommend six EAP intervention strategies such as EAP education workshop, stressmanagement seminar series, time-management seminar series, substance abuse counselling andseminars, financial wellness and EAP online.
