Prayers to declare the awesomeness of the LORD! To order visit: www.johneckhardtministries.com URIM and THUMMIN (Used by the high priest for divine direction, meaning lights; Urim, the oracular brilliancy of the figures in the high-priests breastplate. Thummim- meaning to contain or sparkle; perhaps a pocket (as holding the Urim and Thummim), or rich (as containing gems), used only of the gorget of the highpriest:breastplate) This ephod was presumably part of the high priests garments, to which was attached a breastplate pouch containing the Urim and the Thummim (Exodus 28, especially vs. 30; cf. Leviticus 8:8). Davids request, Bring the ephod here (1 Samuel 23:9), immediately precedes his inquiry of the Lord. Numbers 27:21 And he shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask counsel for him after the judgment of URIM before the LORD: at his word shall they go out, and at his word they shall come in, both he, and all the children of Israel with him, even all the congregation. Deuteronomy 33:8 And of Levi he said, Let thy THUMMIM and thy URIM be with thy holy one, whom thou didst prove at Massah, and with whom thou didst strive at the waters of Meribah; 1 Samuel 28:6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the LORD answered him not, neither by dreams, nor by URIM, nor by prophets. God has placed within you a spiritual Urim and Thummim. He has placed within you a sign, a revelation that will cause you to receive a yes answer or a no answer. You can still come to God in prayer with that kind of question. Lord, must I do this? And the answer will come up from within your spirit as a, yes, yes, or a uh uh, no way. You will sense it in your spirit. You will feel it. You will feel it as a surge which says, Yes, it is good, do it! Or you will feel a check in your spirit. It is a gut feel, an inner thing. It is a very deep thing, and what is actually taking place is that God is speaking to you out of your (Les D. Crause)

This however goes beyond a simple yes and no. David enquired of the Ephod, and God told him yes, but also to pursue, overtake, and recover all. Many of Gods people do not seem to understand this. We have the Wordwhat more do we need? Is the attitude of many. Let us make it clear: the word of God is all we need to fully equip us for a life of fruitfulness and godliness. But that Word must be illuminated by His Spirit as we walk along in the pathway of life. Also, there will be many times when we will need a very explicit word for particular moments of decision, or some grievous area of conflict, that the Bible was never intended to give us. It does not take from what is written, nor add to it. But we are a people of the Way, just as Israel was. And like them we need clear direction and guidance, and some very specific words from the heart of God from time to time, as we travel the unknown way, and go through areas of conflict and trial. Now Joshua was warned that He must meditate in the book of the law day and night for his success (Josh. 1:8). Nevertheless he would need some direct counsel from the LORD along the way; and Eleazar the priest was to ask counsel for him after the judgment of Urim before the LORD (Num. 27:21). God would be faithful to give him clear and infallible directionboth as he went forth in battle, and as he came home in victory. It was not a game of chancelike the throwing of the dice, or a yes or no type of thing. It was a pure, clear word from the mouth of the LORD. (George Warnock)
