They are interspersed to indicate that they happen simultaneously. Numerous x s are used in both case to indicate that the tenses in both cases are past continuous.

I would draw two simple stick figure images. The first would be someone with barbells in hand to indicate exercising. The other would be lounging on a couch to indicate lack thereof.

To facilitate a lesson on asking for and giving directions, I would print off a small number of GoogleMaps or Mapquest pages for different locations in New York City. They would include some of the more famous locations in Manhattan (the Empire State Building, the World Trade Center site, Union Square, etc.) They would be of suitable zoom level that the larger streets could be seen, but still give an overview of a general area around. For the sake of the lesson, I would mark on the printout, the location from which the students would be asking for and giving directions.

A pie chart would provide the best visual aid to teach the terms majority and minority . I would start with an obvious example, one in which one portion of the chart covers 75% or more. I would then move on to examples closer to 50/50 but with one section being a definite majority.
