Sugarcane Acreage & Production :
The sugar industry in India uses only sugarcane as input, hence sugarcaneacreage and production is a key factor in determining sugar productionfor the year. The area under sugarcane cultivation has gradually increasedover the years mainly due to the diversion of land by the farmers fromother crops to sugarcane for economic reasons.Sugar mills have been largely established in large sugarcane growingstates like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka,Gujarat and Tamil Nadu. These six states together account for 80-90% of the sugarcane produced in India.Accordingly, the leading sugar producing states are Uttar Pradesh,Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka, accounting for 85-95% of the total sugar produced in India. In SY 2008P, these states accounted for about 90% of the total sugarcane production in India, with Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh leading with24% and 37% respectively of the total sugarcane production, and for about 92% of total sugar production in India, again with Maharashtra andUttar Pradesh leading with 34% and 28% respectively of the total sugar  produced in India.

Sugar Cycle:
  Process of Sugar Cycle
Sugar industry typically follows a cycle which spans over a period of fiveto seven year. Higher sugarcane and higher sugar production results in afall in sugar prices, which in turn result in non-payment of dues tofarmers. This compels the farmers to switch to other crops therebycausing a shortage of sugarcane, which in turn lead to an increase insugarcane prices and thereby increases profits. Since prices of sugarcanehave increased, farmers now switch back to sugarcane production, whichin turn leads to a fall in sugar prices.
