The recommendeddosage of paracetamolin adults is two500mg tablets (i.e.1gm paracetamol)every four to sixhours, notexceedingeight tablets(4gms) inany 24 hour period(1). This isa nontoxic drugthat has excellentgastric toleranceand is increasinglyaccepted and used.Phenylephrinereducescongestion, edemaand secretions thatcause nasalobstruction, and provides a bronchodilatoryeffect withoutincreasing cardiacrate.Carbetapentanefights againstcough, andvitamins B1 and Caid instrengtheningorganic defensemechanisms.Anti-pyreticContraindicatedin patientshypersensitive todrug.•Use cautiously in patients withlong termalcohol use becausetherapeuticdoses causehepatotoxicityin these patients.•Hematologic:hemolytic anemia,neutropenia,leucopenia, pancytopenia.•Hepatic:Jaundice•Metabolic:Hypoglycemia•Skin: rash,urticariaWhen taken at therecommendeddose,side-effects of paracetamol arerare.Skin rashes, blooddisorders and aswollen pancreashave occasionallyhappened in peopletaking the drug ona regular basis for a long time.A paracetamoloverdose is particularlydangerous becausethe liver damagemay not beobvious for four tosix days after thedrug has beentaken. Even if someone who hastaken a paracetamoloverdose seemsfine and doesn'thave anysymptoms, it'sessential that theyare taken tohospital urgently.An overdose of paracetamol can be fatal.Use liquid formfor children and patients whohave difficultyswallowing.•In children, don’texceed five dosesin 24 hours.•Advise patient thatdrug isonly for shortterm use andto consult the physician if giving tochildren for longer than 5days or adultsfor longer than 10days.•Warn patientthat high dosesor unsupervisedlong term usecan cause liver damage.
