Do you the Pharisees bug you? I mean, do they just tick you off sometimes? I have to admit (and letthis be my confession) that they really do bother me. If it were possible I would jump through thepages of my Bible, grab them by the shoulders and give them a good shake while screaming at the top
of my lungs, “What’s wrong with you?” “Don’t you get it?” “Can’t you see?” “Are you blind?”
The fact is,
they could see less than the man who had been physically blind because
they were spiritually blind. But this is the whole point of the story in John 9 isn’t it? A blind man re-
ceives his sight, a profound miracle unfolds before them, a work of God
but because it happens onthe Sabbath and outside the comfortable box of ritual and rules
no celebration, no party, no worshipservice. Instead the blind man gaining his sight plunges them into a convoluted tizzy. Unable to seetheir way to a greater understanding of God and the freedom that He offers they stumble through thedarkness of their ignorance and sin.
Before we get too hard on these religious fanatics, let’s make sure that we’re not also spiritually blind.
It can be just as easy for us to live in that place of ignorance where we dictate to God how He can do
things. Isn’t it supposed to be the other way around? God will do the impossible, perform miracles,
and change lives (His Word says so)
but He will do it in His way, in His time, using His methods. Wemight be shocked by what the Maverick Messiah will do, but we are not asked to approve we are onlyasked to believe.
Read John 9:1-38.
1. How do you feel when an authority figure (your boss, the police, your pastor) “pulls you over” for
a talk?2. What convinces some of the Pharisees to stand against Jesus (v.16, see also 5:9-10, 23)? What
question bothers the “others”?
3. Why does Jesus keep healing on the Sabbath when it upsets the Pharisees so much?4. Note the contrasting claims to knowledge and certainty on the part of the Pharisees, the parents, and the man born blind. What is each sure of? Not sure of?
