The Emergence o Digital Multi-Media
Ater prolonged hostility towards the digital publishing revolution, Australia’s publishingindustry nally embraced the e-book in 2011. In November that year, Google openedtheir Australian GoogleBooks store, complementing Amazon and iTunes to establish alocal e-book marketplace independent o - though related to - the vast US, UK and Euro-pean e-retailer networks. In early 2012, shortly ollowing the release o the Apple iPad, Apple launched its iBooksAuthor sotware, enabling the easy insertion o video, text and graphics into digitaltextbooks. As Pearson Education latched onto the sotware, competition between Appleand PC / Android based platorms or multimedia Apps emerged.By mid-2012, Thorpe-Bowker’s international e-book survey reported that Australia, though slow to start, now led the world in the take-up o e-book related technologies(e-readers, tablets, platorms). However, only a small percentage o e-books were re-leased in multi-media ormat despite the technology being readily available.
