And all the people answered and said, It is well spoken. Fire represents purity, power, holiness, and judgment. Elijah challenged the prophets of Baal to call upon their God to answer by fire. This was a direct challenge to Baal who was considered the possessor of fire. The true God is a consuming fire (Deut.4:24; Heb.12:29). The Lord descended upon Sinai in a fire. Exodus 19:18 And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly. Notice the response of the people: Exodus 20:18-20 And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but let not God speak with us, lest we die. And Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye sin not.

The people FEARED GOD. Elijah prophets bring back the fear of God. They represent the God that answers by fire. They call us back to covenant. Fire represents the judgment upon broken covenant. John who came in the power and spirit of Elijah warned Israel about a coming baptism of fire. He called upon them to repent. Many responded and returned to the fear of God. True prophetic ministry will help sustain a high level of the fear of the Lord. Psalm 34:9 O fear the LORD, ye his saints: for there is no want to them that fear him. Proverbs 3:7 Be not wise in thine own eyes: fear the LORD, and depart from evil. 2 Corinthians 7:1 Having therefore these promises, dearly beloved, let us cleanse ourselves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit, perfecting holiness in the fear of God.
