1. Excellent reliability and powerful operation General Information
The cutting-edge design of the series RCAWTM air-cooled screw chiller accomplishes high performance and reliability for industrial and commercial market. LG air-cooled screw compressors are precisely machined from solid compound metal bar using profound cutting process. Tolerance is maintained within a few microns just like one-tenth hair thickness. Robust components with highly skilled assembling process help the compressor last for a long time. LG condenser production technology is already well-known to worldwide air conditioning manufacturing industries because of its leading technologies.

2. World class compact design (Compact model RCAW****B**)


The RCAW model air-cooled screw chiller is a compact model of LG chillers and small compared to those of other major chiller manufacturers averages 30% in external dimensional footprint. This model is also very light because of its compactness. This model is suitable for the place where there is restriction in space and for replacement of old chillers. All physical sizes were reduced without any sacrifice. This compactness could be achieved by simplifying compression chamber, modifying coil configuration, developing new oil separator, and optimizing oil piping configuration. 'RCAW' was designed to be a prime chiller and was born to lead air-cooled chiller market. It is LG technology.

3. Low noise and low vibration


The unit was designed with a compact structure and robust assembly. The condenser fan is completed with high-efficiency wing style axial fan and direct driven motor for low sound level. The unit configures compressor sound insulation box (option), which makes LG chillers silent and stable.

Semi-hermetic twin-rotor screw compressor. Direct-drive, low speed. Only three moving parts, resulting in high reliability. The slide valve has a unique profile, optimized for part-load conditions. Field serviceable and easy maintenance. Precise rotor tip clearance A refrigerant dispersing device is set internally to the compressor for motor cooling.

7. Factory testing
Unit performance testing All LG air-cooled screw chillers are given a complete functional test at the factory. LG computer-based testing programs completely check the components including sensors, wiring, electronics and microprocessor control functions. LG promotes factory performance tests for air-cooled chillers and water-cooled chillers to show that we stand behind the products which are designed and build up. The benefits of a performance test include verification of performance, prevention of operational problems, and assurance of a smooth start-up. Each compressor is run and tested to verify capacity and efficiency. The result of this testing, chiller arrives at the job site fully tested and ready for operation. The LG test facility is able to simulate real circumstance assuring operation in differing climates.

10. Flooded type evaporator


The flooded type evaporator which have the higher evaporating temperature of refrigerant than direct expansion can increase the performance. The distributor can make the uniform refrigerant flow.

11. Eco-friendly refrigerant R134a


System designed with Eco-friendly refrigerant R134a which does not harm the ozone layer & protects the environment. The HCFC (R22) series cannot produce any more from 2020 according to the Montreal Protocol for protection of ozone layer.

Communication interface Controlled by various control protocols for BMS interface through Modbus port (Standard) or BACnet or LonWorks Port (Factory installed optional) ASME U Stamp Evaporator is designed, tested and stamped in accordance with ASME for a refrigerant side working pressure of 300 psig(2.1Mpa). Coil protection & Access protection Coated wire mesh covers to protect condenser coil, evaporator and compressor. Soft starter(factory installed option) Soft starter is provided for the soft start of compressor by linear voltage increase. Isolators(field installed option) Neoprene isolator and Spring isolator are provided as field installed option by LG for vibration damping of chiller. Condenser corrosion protection For protecting the condenser in corrosive environment, epoxy coated option is provided. Site conditions should be matched with the proper condenser fin coatings to inhibit coil corrosion and extend equipment life. High ambient operation The high ambient option permits operation at high ambient (up to 125F/52C). Sound proof Compressor sound attenuating blanket (factory installed) is provided for making it sound proof. Power disconnect switch Disconnect switch to isolate the chiller from main power can be provided. Power connection Power connections are provided as shown in the below table as Standard and option.

5. Controls
Unit controls of the LGE air cooled screw chiller shall include following benefits and features.

General Information

1. Sequence of controls
When the product starts to run, the condenser fan and the water pump run simultaneously. In the same time, the magnetic valve 1 is turned on for the minimum low capacity operation. While the contactor position of condenser fans is checked, water flow is also checked a few seconds later after water pump run. In case of having no problem with water flow, startup delay will be activated. Approximately after one minute delay outlet temperature of chilled water is checked whether the water temperature is reached up enough to operate the compressor. When the PLC decides to operate the compressor, compressor starts with wye start and then delta start after a few seconds. During the starting process of compressor, while the compressor contactor is checking for problem, the solenoid valve for oil is opened in order to achieve proper oil circulation. After starting process, normal control starts. The normal control include capacity control, refrigerant mid pressure control for motor cooling, condenser fan control and alarm control. When the chiller is decided to turn off, compressor load of the compressor is changed to minimum load position by changing magnetic valve 1 and turning off magnetic valve 2 and magnetic valve 3. After the delay for shutdown, the compressor is stopped. When the compressor is stopped, the water pump will still run for a period in order to protect the compressor from frequent restart and withdraw latent heat from evaporator of chiller.

2. Adaptive chiller control and higher level protection.


The latest chiller control technologies provide enhanced operations of the chiller. The chiller control system is based on recent PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) technology. Because the PLC is designed to be compatible with several electromagnetic interference and also compatible with severe ambient conditions, the unit has reliable controllability in any conditions. The adaptive chiller control is designed to operate the unit to withstand sever conditions and maintain its operation. Good examples are condenser fan controls by cycling according to the temperature of condenser refrigerant and the limitation of compressor capacity in the case of high chilled water temperature. Along with the adaptive control, the control also provides higher level protection through multiple protective devices. For example triple protective devices are used for the detection of abnormal oil circulation. The control system continues to monitor the hazardous conditions of the unit, and shutdown the unit to protect the unit safely when any condition meets safety limit.

3. Rich human machine interface


The HMI (Human Machine Interface) side of the PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) and HMI assembly is shown on the door side as shown in the below picture. The HMI is composed of wide full dot LCD with 4 line display and back light, 9 functional keys, and 15 indicating LEDs for rich user interface. Through the LCD interface, the operator can monitor the status of chiller operation and control in detail. And the control configurations also can be performed through the LCD interface. For the monitoring and the configuration, 7 menu items are prepared in the LCD display from main menu to parameter setting as shown in the below picture. In the below picture, amendable menu contents for the configuration are depicted with shaded color.

4. Superior power supply monitoring


Superior power supply monitoring function of the control system is enabled by protective function against high voltage, low voltage, power loss, phase reverse, and phase imbalance. The superior function of safe power supply to the unit is provided as standard.

5. Standard wye-delta start type and optional soft start type


The wye-delta start provides reduced starting current by 1/3. The LGE chiller is equipped with the wye-delta start of the compressor. Optionally, soft start type shall be provided for soft start of the compressor by linear voltage increase.

6. Standard MODBUS connectivity and optional BACnet and LonWorks connectivity.


The control system of the LGE chiller provides measure to be integrated in modern BMS system seamlessly. Because the control system provides MODBUS connectivity by standard, no additional cost for the BMS integration is needed for the system integration based on the MODBUS. Specially, BACnet or LonWorks can be applied to the system on the request of customer by option.

1. General
LG RCAW series are microprocessor controlled, twin-screw compressor, air-cooled, liquid chillers. Each RCAW series chiller is factory-assembled including compressor, motor, evaporator, condenser, and control box. The initial charge of refrigerant HFC-134a and oil will be supplied for all units. Chillers shall be rated in accordance with ARI Standard 550/590. Chillers shall be evacuated and fully charged with refrigerant and oil, and shall be factory operational run tested.

2. Equipment
2.01 Application range

This specification is applied to all the models of air cooled screw chillers RCAW which is made and sold by LG Electronics Co.
2.02 General structure

Chiller is all in one and is made with convenient structure for installation, operation and maintenance management and also compact to minimize the installation area.
2.03 Screw compressor

Semi-hermetic screw compressor uses environment friendly refrigerant, R-134a (HFC series). Motor is 3 phase and semi-hermetic type. Apparatus for supplying oil is operated by the pressure difference of high and low pressure, it has oil filter and oil heater in it to minimize oil dilution. It has the structure to recover oil from discharged gas by built in oil separator. Capacity control is step less control or step control by slide valve operation through electric valve open-close which senses chilled water outlet temperature. For protecting compressor, PTC sensor is installed which is able to sense motor temperature. Check valve is installed at refrigerant discharge outlet to prevent the compressor from the backward flow of refrigerant gas when chiller stops. Compressor has a built-in motor to prevent refrigerant leakage. The rotor housing is made of high strength gray cast iron FC-25.
2.04 Evaporator Evaporator is (flooded) shell & tube type and made with carbon steel. Also it has tube changeable structure. To increase the efficiency of evaporator, it has the structure to spray refrigerant liquid on heat exchanger tube surface. It has the structure which is easy to be disassembled, because water box cover is attached and fixed with bolt & nut for maintenance and washing of inner tube. Safety valve which spouts refrigerant of evaporator is installed to protect chiller in case when temperature increases too much because of fire. Tube is phosphorus deoxidization bronze pipe which has over 99.9% purity and no joint, outside of it is attached to special shape Fin, inside of it has inner grooved tube or equivalent product.

1. Guide Specifications
Anti-freezing switch is installed at chilled water outlet to prevent it from being frozen and burst by chilled water flow stopping, chilled water temperature decreasing, and drain plug, air bent plug are at body. Evaporator is covered with thermal insulation materials for dew condensation prevention and thermal insulation. Design pressure for shell is 300psig(2.1MPa). Design working pressure for tube line is 150psig(1.0MPa) or 300psig(optional). The evaporator and economizer are insulated with 3/4inch(19mm) insulation(K=0.26). 2.05 Condenser

Tubes in condenser are made with phosphorus deoxidization bronze pipe which has no joint part and purity over 99.9%, and made in structure with Al fin to increase heat transfer area. (cross fin & tube type) Inner pressure test of refrigerant working side is done at 1.5 times of 2.5MPa which is designed pressure; it should not have any leakage or change. Condenser coil which has been passed the inner pressure test are vacuumed to remove all moisture. Propeller type is used for fan, it has proper air volume. Also it has proper strength for circulating air and is operated stably through balance test. Fan motor is applied by insulation class F. Condenser fans are direct-driven.
2.06 Expansion device

Expansion devices are installed between compressor and evaporator to enable refrigerant to be evaporated in cooler by reducing pressure (throttling).
2.07 Oil separator

Oil heater is installed inside of oil separator to maintain proper oil temperature, at the same time to separate refrigerant from oil. Oil which is supplied to compressor is operated by the difference of high and low pressure without extra oil pump. OIL TANK has a sight glass to enable operator to check the oil level.
2.08 Economizer, Flash gas tank

Economizer is installed to increase efficiency of refrigeration cycle. Refrigerant passed through the condenser is separated to refrigerant liquid and flash gas in the economizer. Refrigerant liquid is sent to evaporator and flash gas is sent to compressor inlet to enhance the chiller performance. Economizer does not have any driving part; it has the structure to increase the chiller performance.
2.09 Safety devices

Temperature check Sensing overheat of compressor discharge temperature, sensing overheat of compressor motor wire, and anti-freezing switch. Chilled water flow Chilled water flow switch. Voltage and current Voltage monitoring system, compressor over-current breaker (compressor OCR) and fan motor over-current breaker (fan motor OCR).
2.10 Spray ejector for oil return

Spray ejector which does not really need extra energy for consumption, recovers the oil mixed with refrigerant for supplying to the compressor.
2.11 Auto controls

Chiller has its own auto control function; also component parts for auto control shall be installed in an extra control panel and power panel. Control panel and power panel shall be designed to satisfy waterproof class IP54. Component parts for auto control are installed in the control panel and power panel, Controller and power supply device are in the control panel and fan, electric contactor for controlling compressor and 3 phase power related device are in the power panel. Indicator which indicates supply of control power, stop switch for emergency and the control powers ON/OFF switch shall be installed in the control panel. The PLC (Programmable Logic Controller) is applied to control the chiller enhances the chiller performance and through HMI (Human Machine Interface) that has 4-line LCD in full dot way and 9 soft buttons function, it aids user interface and the function of it contains these below. - Chiller ON/OFF - Detect the sensor of chiller and indicate operation information - Indicate malfunction occurrence and history - Input and indicate the set temperature and user setting value - Input and indicate control setting and service setting value Temperature sensor information of chiller is provided through HMI, which contains the following: - Chilled water inlet temperature - Chilled water outlet temperature - Compressor outlet refrigerant temperature - Condenser outlet refrigerant temperature - Ambient temperature HMI indicates setting of controller and control condition through several LED for operation convenience, and the information of control condition contains these below. - Schedule operation/Manual operation selection - Delay-time - Compressor re-circulating operation - MODBUS control application setting - Pre-heating control application setting - Pre-heating control delay

PLC provides MODBUS RTU communication function; especially Lon Works or BACnet can be applied to the system on the request of customer by installing exterior type translator. Power panel contains electric contactor for compressor and over load relay. Electric contactor for compressor is made to minimize the running current of compressor through Y- start. Power panel contains electric contactor and over-load relay for each condenser fan. Power panel contains power monitoring device to detect power supply condition, and power monitoring device has over 5 detecting function including reverse voltage, over voltage, low voltage, open-phase, and no voltage. Auto control system of chiller contains the following functions: - It performs fan and compressor ON/OFF function and several solenoid valve controlling. - It provides interlock point of contact for controlling chilled water pump. - It controls refrigerant volume through the condition of compressor operation and slide valve of compressor for achieving chilled water outlet setting temperature. - When chilled water outlet temperature and condenser outlet refrigerant temperature is high, limit the compressor operation to prevent malfunction. - Keep proper pressure of condenser through fan control by condenser outlet temperature.
2.12 Refrigerant piping

Ref. piping is made with phosphorus deoxidization bronze pipe which has no joint and its purity over 99.9%, and is installed to for smooth flow of refrigerant between each component. Install check valve at compressor discharge side not to reverse the discharged refrigerant. Install filter dryer at pipe to absorb the moisture from inner side of pipe and filter the alien substance. From expansion valve to evaporator pipe has insulation to prevent flash gas occurrence, also to prevent dew condensation on pipe surface. When discharged gas temperature is abnormal, electric valve is operated and protect a compressor by connecting the liquid refrigerant to suction pipe of compressor (liquid injection pipe). After test, vacuum is done so that there shall be no moisture inside.

3. Other
Chiller is made after getting approval on everything about production from ordering company. About thing that is not in this specification, discuss it with ordering company and get approval.
