Most grammar textbooks would describe What simply as an interrogative pronoun, but note that it simultaneously functions as the direct object of the verbal (infinitive) to do. The infinitive functions as the direct object of are trying. More on this later. Prepositional phrases are between {curly brackets}. You were NOT asked to identify these. I have included this in the solution to make identification of subjects and verbs easier.
