How to use observational learning in the work place:
Observational learning is the process of learning by watching a real-lifeexample. People with different personality types learn and retain knowledgebest under different circumstances. For some employees, observationallearning paired with hands-on experience can help them learn new thingsquickly and effectively apply new knowledge in their job roles. Savvy companies understand how to use observational learning in the workplaceto develop high-performance employees and teams.Step 1 Allow job applicants to shadow current employees for a day to learn moreabout job opportunities. Job applicants do not always fully understand the job tasks involved. If employees discover during their first week on the jobthat they have made a mistake, the company can lose money through lost productivity, additional recruiting costs and additional training costs.Step 2Pair new hires with existing employees for on-the-job training. On-the-jobtraining mixes observational learning with hands-on learning, a highly effective combination. Learning job tasks by watching experiencedemployees gives new hires an opportunity to ask questions and request that their trainers show them certain tasks multiple times.Step 3Invite high-performing employees in line for leadership positions to assist managers with certain tasks to learn about managerial responsibilitiesfirsthand. Newly-promoted managers can face a steep learning curve when it comes to their new responsibilities. Allowing them to soak up informationthrough personal observation before receiving their promotions can betterprepare advancement candidates for their future roles.
