SANTORUM'S SCAMS, SCHEMES & SCANDALS The K Street Project Behind the sweater vests, the faith and family, and the self-definition as a congressional reformer lies another Rick Santorum. This Rick Santorum favors big business, curries favor from lobbyists, and helped to bind the Washington influence industry to the Republican Party while serving in Congress. Beginning in 2001, after Republicans seized control of Congress and the White House, then-Sen. Santorum (R-Pa.) began hosting Tuesday morning meetings with a select group of lobbyists. These meetings were part of a larger plan -- originally launched in the 1990s by Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas), conservative activist Grover Norquist and others when the GOP retook the House of Representatives after 40 years of Democratic control -- to pressure lobbying firms and trade associations to dump their Democratic lobbyists and replace them with Republicans. Named after the Washington business corridor famous for housing lobbying firms, the K Street Project was aimed at installing a permanent Republican majority in Washington.

Journalist Nicholas Confessore explained Santorum's role in the K Street Project in a 2003 Washington Monthly article: "Santorum's responsibility is to make sure each [top lobbying job] is filled by a loyal Republican -- a senator's chief of staff, for instance, or a top White House aide, or another lobbyist whose reliability has been demonstrated. After Santorum settles on a candidate, the lobbyists present make sure it is known whom the Republican leadership favors." This wasn't just backroom chatter. There were real direct effects on policy. When Jack Valenti, the longtime chief of the Motion Picture Association of America, retired, Republicans led by Santorum and DeLay sought to pressure the trade group to hire a Republican. The MPAA ultimately replaced Valenti with former Clinton administration Agriculture Secretary Dan Glickman, deeply offending leaders of the K Street Project. Santorum brought up the Glickman hire at a closed-door Republican caucus meeting and was quoted in a 2004 Roll Call article saying, "Yeah, we had a meeting and, yeah, we talked about making sure that we have fair representation on K Street. ... I admit that I pay attention to who is hiring, and I think it's important for leadership to pay attention." Later in 2004, the Republicans in Congress voted down $1.5 billion in subsidies for the movie industry. Grover Norquist told Roll Call at the time that the movie industry's hire of Glickman was one of the reasons Republicans scuttled the subsidies. "Hollywood has recently expressed contempt for the Republican leadership in the House, Senate and White House," Norquist said. The MPAA did ultimately hire a Republican for another top position, and many other big influence-industry jobs started to fall into the hands of partisan Republicans. A 2003 Washington Post article reported, "A Republican National Committee official recently told a group of GOP lobbyists that 33 of 36 top-level Washington positions he is monitoring went to Republicans." These new jobs provided partisans with a direct line to client funds -- that is, contributions from corporate executives and political action committees -- to funnel to the Republican candidates of their choosing. In some cases, these trade associations ran issue advocacy campaigns to support GOP policies or to attack vulnerable Democratic lawmakers. Running for reelection in 2006, Santorum leaned heavily on this new fundraising base. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, Santorum received $496,683 from Washington lobbyists, the most of any candidate during that election cycle. Over his career, Santorum received $731,937 from lobbyists in Washington.

If the K Street Project's goal was to turn Washington's lobbying world into a petri dish of movement conservatism, it backfired. The project's real outcome was to strengthen the connection between the Republican Party in Washington and the business community at large. The business-backed influence industry gained new power over the GOP lawmakers -- and it paid off. Pharmaceutical companies won big in the prescription drug expansion of Medicare, energy company lobbyists wrote most of the 2005 energy bill, and legislation was filled with earmarks requested by the influence peddlers. The tight ties binding business, lobbyists and the Republican Party became one of the key gripes of the Tea Party movement as it rose to action in 2009 and 2010. Former Alaska governor and vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin has decried "crony capitalism" and called lobbyists "symptomatic of the greater problem that we see right now in Washington." Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) referred to lobbyists as a "distinctly criminal class" in his 2010 run for the Senate. Matthew Continetti, conservative writer and former editor of the Weekly Standard, wrote a book about the corrupting influence of lobbyists in the Republican Party, "The K Street Gang," back in 2006. In a National Review interview, he explained, "Many lobbyists place the private over the public interest and the economic interests of a client over the national interests of the American people. This contributes to the degradation of public-spiritedness and national identity, and should trouble anyone concerned about American politics and American civic life." Indeed, by 2006, the K Street Project was a national scandal. Two of its best-known participants, lobbyist Jack Abramoff and DeLay, had been indicted for other crimes -Abramoff for corruption and DeLay for money laundering. Santorum distanced himself from the project, stating in February 2006, "We don't have a K Street Project. ... I have never called anybody or talked to anyone to try to get anybody a position on K Street with one exception, and that is if someone from my office is applying for a job and an employer calls me." But one month later, after the temporary, scandal-induced hiatus, Santorum restarted his lobbyist gatherings. A so-called "leadership PAC" created by Santorum that was supposed to fund other Republicans instead seemed to mostly pay for the lifestyle of Santorum and those around him. An investigation of the America's Foundation PAC showed that only 18 percent of its money went to fund political candidates, less -- and typically far less -than any other "leadership PACs." What America's Foundation did spend a lot on with what looked like everyday expenses, including 66 trips to the Starbucks in Santorum's then-hometown of Leesburg, Va., multiple fast-food outings and expenditures at Walmart, Target and Giant supermarkets. Campaign finance experts said the PAC's expenses -- paid for by donations from wealthy businessmen and lobbyists -- were "unconventional," at best and arguably not legal. Santorum also funded his large Leesburg "McMansion" with a $500,000 mortgage from a private bank run by a major campaign donor, in a program that was only supposed to be open to high-wealth investment clients in the trust, which Santorum was not, and closed to the general public. Santorum didn't seem to be against government waste when it came to his family. During his years in the Senate, Santorum raised his family in northern Virginia and rarely if ever seemed to use the small house that he claimed as his legal residence, in a blue-collar Pittsburgh suburb called Penn Hills. So Pennsylvania voters were shocked when they found out the Penn Hills School District had paid out $72,000 for the home cyberschooling of five of Santorum's kids, hundreds of miles away in a different state. In 2005 people may recall that Santorum made political headlines for visiting the deathbed of Terri Schaivo, the woman at the center of the national right-to-die controversy. He was merely attempting to achieve political gain as a supposed Christian conservative. It was later determined that the real reason he was in the area, again exposed by Philadelphia Daily News, was to collect money, some $250,000 to be exact, from a fundraiser by Outback Steakhouses. Outback heavily supported him, because its executives loved the Santorums positions, his passion for a low minimum wage for waitresses and other rank-and-file workers. Now, as terminal proof of the nature of this opportunist and his desire for leisure and pleasure at others expense, Santorums efforts were also aided by his unusual mode of travel: Walmarts corporate jet. The visit to Schaivo was a wicked ploy. Santorum battled to limit any increases in minimum wage, while seeking also to overturn overtime rules for the benefit of Wal-Marts bottom line. Regarding this most sued company in the world Santorum created tort reform to limit lawsuits against it for its discriminatory behavior. In a similar scheme he took money from lobbyists to undermine blue- collar workers, forcing them to join Unions and endure pay dues. Not much of a defender of the all-American family, especially the middle and lower class. Santorum made his way into big money by doing favors for every mega-corporation conceivable, including US Tobacco Corporation, Miller Brewing Company, AnheuserBusch, and Big Coal. Santorum is the Lobbyist's Candidate and the Crook's Candidate. He played an essential role in the trading of favors and money for influence, the socalled K Street Project, which led to the imprisonment of the disgraced Jack Abramoff, with whom he worked directly. No wonder he scored the most corrupt of the corrupt. BIG COAL Santorum's plant project for Schuylkill, Pennsylvania was supposed to convert coal to combustible liquids. Because of the expensive nature of the process it could only be competitive through massive subsidies. Santorum boasted of his role in securing a $100,000 federal loan for the project. The lobbyists had already paid Republican Party power broker Bob Asher $900,000. Still, though, despite the profiteering of Santorum and Asher the plant hasnt been built. Santorum claimed in the New Hampshire primary debate, that in the fight for justice he contacted a local coal company in my area. I said, look, I want to join you in that fight. I want to work together with you. It is all lies. What he really did was work exclusively for his own greedy gains. Consul Energy, the company for whom he was a consultant, is hardly a little local entity but is instead one of the largest coal mining conglomerates in the world. Nor was he a volunteer, as

he alludes. Rather, he was being paid handsomely by Consul to loosen the regulations for their benefit, nearly $150,000 in less than a year, ending August 2011. Yet, on national TV during the New Hampshire he made this an issue, as if a kind of disinformation. Truly, he told bold lies to millions of people. There is further proof of his deception. The relationship with Consul dates back to his campaign as Senator, where he received some $74,000 from Consul, while simultaneously the firm spent more than $1 million lobbying Congress to reduce the demands on polluters. In the most recent congressional debate over a climate bill, the one for which Santorum volunteered his services, Consol spent $10.24 million on lobbying, a major increase over its lobbying expenditures in previous years. Much of that money was spent to defeat legislation to cap greenhouse gas emission. Santorum was the key leg man to help Consul achieve this.

MEDICARE FRAUD Santorum served on the board of a for-profit hospital chain, Universal Health Services (UHS), where he received $341,000 in compensation from 2007 to 2010. During Santorum's four years on the board, UHS's McAllen, Texas, hospital group was sued for defrauding Medicare through "illegal compensation to doctors in order to induce them to refer patients to hospitals within the group," according to a Justice Department press release in 2009. The McAllen group agreed to settle the lawsuit by paying $27.5 million. The next year, the Justice Department sued a Virginia UHS facility that caters to boys ages 11 to 17 alleging that the facility "billed Medicaid for inpatient psychiatric care that was not provided, in violation of federal and state Medicaid requirements, and falsified records to cover up their serious violations." When asked about the Virginia case. Santorum told Yahoo News, "Any investigation, you obviously engage and fully cooperate with it, and that's what we did.. that's part of the responsibility of directors." He resigned from the UHS board in June 2011. During the third quarter of 2011, UHS reached a tentative financial settlement of the Virginia case. SANTORUM IS DIRECTLY CONNECTED WITH A PEDOPHILIA RING HEADED BY EX-FOOTBALL COACH JERRY SANDUSKY. The founder Second Mile, a Pennsylvania-based charity purporting to aid troubled juveniles, Sandusky used the facility for far different reasons than purported. The orphaned, troubled, and vulnerable children/teens he took in were, in fact, raped. Sandusky himself had sex with at least 8 of them. Sandusky and his others farmed numerous of these children out to be used as sex objects. This was by the mighty and rich, including U.S. Congressmen and Senators. Like Sandusky, Santorum housed these juveniles as pages, making them ultimately available to both the wealthy and Washington, D.C. based politicians. He regarded him so highly that he personally gave him an award, the Congressional Angels in Adoption Award." When NBC's Bob Costas interviewed Sandusky, asking him, "Are you sexually attracted to young boys or underage boys?" he responded, as if he didn't hear the question, "Am I sexually attracted to underage boys? Yes." The man is so fixed in his rot that he couldn't resist proclaiming this, even on national TV. He also admitted that he was caught sexually abusing a 10 year-old boy in a shower at Penn State. In describing the unspeakable said assistant coach Mike McQueary, who witnessed the act, Sandusky was raping the child in the anus. McQueary reported this directly to the head coach, Joe Paterno. He did nothing, and although this is a capital crime he failed to report it to the police. As the traumatized youths kept coming forward, lawsuits for sexual abuse were launched. As a result, Santorum's and Sandusky's 'angelic' adoption center was shuttered, and all assets seized in order to settle the suits. Now, while Santorum denies it he is indelibly tied to Sandusky as revealed by Wayne Madsen in the Madsen Report these men worked closely not only in the Second Mile project but also directly in placing the youths in harms way. Santorum himself used these youths in his offices as pages. In other words, regarding these highly vulnerable juveniles the two worked as a team. However, now, when asked about it, what does Santorum say? He says that, as reported on November 8, 2011, by the Philadelphia Inquirer, he "does not know Sandusky personally." Then, who presented the award, his fairy God mother? Santorum also defended Joe Paterno, saying he should be treated leniently. Even after child rape was official reported by the police the highly compromised Santorum stood strong for both Sandusky and Paterno. When people questioned Paterno's failure to report the crime to police, again, Santorum came to his

defense. In contrast, he never said a word of concern about the victim or his family. The family values candidate is now thoroughly debunked. Yet, through Santorum's blockade how many other people were harmed? How many other youths were raped and abused because of the indifference of Santorum, Paterno, and their likes? As a former Senator using the page 'system,' while a close associate of Sandusky he would know the inner workings. He could have assisted those tormented ones, cooperating with the police. Not this individual. Instead, he maintains their cover. What degree of pain did they needlessly suffer, what psychological damage that was preventable, all because Santorum help disguise and minimize their crimes? Here again, the always hypocritical Santorum is supporting to the bloody end precisely the people he condemns, adulterers, pornographers, rapids, pedophiles, while paying no heed to the victims, the families. Then, this is the man who claims the moral high ground, drawing hundreds, more likely dozens at most, of people to support him? In fact, his support in the primaries is not so wide, since as has been shown in Iowa and New Hampshire, he installed his own puppet people in many of the meetings. Yet, the point is he would be exceedingly unpopular if even the slightest degree of truth about him was published. The media won't even-handedly tell it. Instead, this is all carefully disguised from the people. In contrast, an honest, decent man, Former Speaker Newt Gingrich, is berated and belittled, while the crimes of Santorum remain fully hidden. Santorum is given a free pass on his involvement and cover-up in the child rape crime. He is obviously involved, since he refuses to side with the victims and instead sides with the abusers. Of note, he has never publically condemned either Sandusky or those others, who covered up the crime. He is never questioned toughly by the media. Shouldn't the media at least have asked Santorum about his sponsorship of the socalled Angel Award? Shouldn't he in particular be asked why he awarded it despite revelations of the rapes? Or, was it, simply, another means of covering for the criminals? It is hard to believe that any Conservative would support Santorum after learning about his past record and transgressions. Santorum has been packaged as a "social conservative," who upholds family values and is for working Americans yet he looks out for the interests of big corporations and the wealthiest one percent of Americans. Santorum, may be appear to be more conservative on social issues than Democrats, but once you peel that layer back you will see that when it comes to tax and spend hes right up there with the liberal Democrats in Congress.

Yet, incredibly, thousands of people believe that he is a good man, who stands for their beliefs. It's sad how easily people can be fooled. They have even went out and voted for him. With the right media spin and a primary victory or two, millions more would vote for him. Even though they have no idea what he represents.
