Course Content
This course is designed for students who have some knowledge of the computer and how it works. Every student will be provided with an equal opportunity to learn and be successful in this course. Assessment will be performed through a skills assessment manager, SAM, which is a computerized skills test along with written exams. Technology utilized: personal desktop computer, Microsoft Office 2007, speech microphones, headsets.

Course Objectives / Units of Study


History of Computer Know the evolution of computers, how they were formed and manipulated; Kinds of Computer Identify the different kind of computers; Microcomputers Identify the parts and explain how one works; Overview of Operating Systems Explain the purpose and function of an OS; Purchasing a Computer Compare and contrast different models of microcomputers, understand how to purchase a computer, and develop a proposal explaining the differences amongst what is available on the market today; Microsoft Office 2007 Produce professional documents, spreadsheets, and charts; Microsoft Office Word 2007 Microsoft Office Excel 2007 Internet Understand its history, perform basic search techniques, and show an understanding of HTML language through the creation of a simple webpage. Attendance Expectations
Consistent attendance is important for student success. If students are sick or absent, THE STUDENT is responsible for completing any missed work. Skyward online grading is usedthe student is expected to visit the course page daily and make sure all work has been submitted and entered correctly into the gradebook. Students are responsible for coming in before and/or after school to catch up with assignments that may have been missed. It is expected that homework assignments be completed on time. Any work submitted after the deadline will be considered late and will be given half credit (50%). Should you have an excused (verified) absence, you will have two days from the day you return to complete and hand in work that was missed due to the absence.

Classroom Expectations
Students should be familiar with the behavior guidelines listed in the Wayzata High School student handbook. Students are expected to: Put forth their best effort each and every class period Come to class prepared to learn Be cooperative with their peers & treat others with respect Participate in class discussions Turn in work on time Sign and abide by the Rules and Regulations of the school Refrain from having food, beverage, cell phones, and personal MP3 playing devices in the classroom Students are responsible for their assigned workstation (computer, monitor, keyboard, etc.) and should inform the instructor if there are any problems or if any damage is noticed. Students will be given one bathroom pass per term to be used upon their discretion.

Professionalism Points
A portion of the students grade (10%) will include professionalism. The 4 Ps of classroom success: (1) Be Prompt, (2) Be Prepared, (3) Be Productive, (4) Be Polite

Professionalism includes, but is not limited to: the 4 Ps of classroom success, abiding by the above stated classroom expectations, putting forth a positive attitude on a daily basis, respecting the instructor/facilitator and other sessionmates, staying ontask, and abiding by the ALS CLC rules. Excessive web browsing is considered as VIOLATION of the ALS CLC rules, and the students professionalism points grade will reflect this if it becomes a problem. Online gaming will not be tolerated and will result in immediate disciplinary action without prior warning.
