ROME, JUNE 1453
The hammering on the door shot him into wakeulness like a hand-gun going o in his ace. The young man scrambled or the daggerunder his pillow, stumbling to his bare eet on the icy oor o thestone cell. He had been dreaming o his parents, o his old home, and he gritted his teeth against the usual wrench o longing oreverything he had lost: the armhouse, his mother, the old lie.The thunderous banging sounded again, and he held the daggerbehind his back as he unbolted the door and cautiously opened it acrack. A dark-hooded fgure stood outside, anked by two heavy-setmen, each carrying a burning torch. One o them raised his torchso the light ell on the slight dark-haired youth, naked to the waist, wearing only breeches, his hazel eyes blinking under a ringe o dark hair. He was about seventeen, with a ace as sweet as a boy, butwith the body o a young man orged by hard work.“Luca Vero?“Yes.”“You are to come with me.”They saw him hesitate. “Don’t be a ool. There are three o usand only one o you, and the dagger you’re hiding behind your back won’t stop us.”
