SCHOOL SUCCESScan be measured by both academic performance and social participation. Your child must be readyto manage the demands of classroom instruction as well as demonstrate appropriate behavior on the playground, in thecafeteria, and other areas.Occupational therapy practitioners help students succeed in all school activities throughout the day. They are importantmembers of the school team to help children learn, make friends, and play. •Setupanareaforhomeworkwithgoodlighting,awayfromTVandotherdistractions.•Keeptrackofhowlongittakesyourchildtocompletehomeworkassignments,andsharethisinformationwiththeschoolteamasneeded.•Recognizetheuniquelearningstyleofyourchildandadjusthomeworkcompletionasneeded.Forexample,somechildrenlearnbestbyreading,whereasotherslearnbestwhentheyhearinformation.Completehomeworksuccessfully.•Makeiteasierforyourchildtolearnbymodifyingassignments,changingdeskheightsorpositions,andofferingadditionalassistance.•Addressunderlyingsensorycomponents(taste,smell,touch,and/orsounds)thataffectlearningandbehavior.•Workwiththeteachertomodifythewayheorshepresentsmaterialstoaddressdifferentlearningstyles.

•Createacomputerworkstationwiththetopofthescreenateyelevelandthefeetatontheoor.•UseparentalcontrolstoblockWebsitesthathaveinappropriatecontent.•Encouragestretchingbreaksduringcomputerorhomeworktimetoincreaseconcentrationanddecreaseirritabilityorfatigue.Usecomputertimeeffectively.•Performanergonomicsevaluationofyourchild’scomputerworkstationtominimizepostureandrepetitioninjuries.•Provideassistivetechnologytohelpyourchildusematerialsinadifferentwayifnecessary(e.g.,converttypedwordstovoice;suggestadifferentmouseorkeyboard;usevoicerecognitionsoftware;introducehelpfulapps).•Provideyourchildwithavarietyofschoolmaterialsandsuppliesindifferentshapesandsizes.Forexample,writingmayimprovewhenusingamechanicalpenciloraballpointpen.•Besureyourchild’sbackpackisnoheavierthan10%ofhisorherweight,andusethewaiststrapstosecureit.Useschoolmaterialsproperly.•Provideadaptationssuchasspecialpaper,zipperpulls,scissors,orbuilt-uppencilstohelpchildrenwithnemotoractivitiessuchaszipperingandhandwriting.•Screenchildrenforproperbackpacksizeandweighttopreventinjury.•Collaborateandconsultwiththeschoolteamtoaddressproperpositioningandtoolusethroughouttheschoolday.
