Hindu is vindu(vijna-learned) and is denoted by the bindu(naama, not sindhu) on the forehead. It was coined to counter buddha(vid -learned),jina(jna-vijna-learned).The rite of upanayana(sacred thread wearing) is related to jnaana(knowledge)snaana(baptism) of the Christians ,brit (bharata) milah(jina-jna etc.) of theJews etc.Its origin period of 5th-4th century BCE is hence logical as given.
