Lindstrom 1 Nate LindstromProfessor JebarajSystems Analysis and Design18 September 2010I¶ve been actively working in IT since I was sixteen years of age, but purely on the systems side. While I am fluent in Perl and am currently teaching myself Ruby, I¶ve never done developmentwork outside of coding my own games (
www.outbreakgame.com
) and writing distributedautomation tools for production operation purposes. I¶d consider myself a power user of Microsoft Visio; I¶ve been using Visio on a frequent basis since Microsoft acquired the productin 2000, and well before this semester I had already upgraded to Visio 2010. At work I useOmniGraffle Pro for most things as Yahoo! is primarily an Apple shop, but overall I still prefer Visio. However, my Visio experience is much like my existing IT experience in that I¶veexclusively drawn things like database relationships, server rack layouts, and network diagrams.I¶m lost when looking at a UML diagram, and wouldn¶t have a clue where to start diagramminga complex system in an abstract fashion. I¶d like to learn what it takes to go from a vaguesoftware idea, sketched hastily on a whiteboard, to producing detailed specifications andarchitectural diagrams and documents that a development team could actually use in producing a product.
